Ritu Mathur: Wuhan Greenland Center Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill architecture has accomplished another feat by winning the international bid to design Wuhan Greenland Center at Wuhan, a meeting point of Yangtez and Han rivers. The building will highlight China on the world map as it will be the fourth tallest building in the world. The Chicago based firm will be leading an interdisciplinary team consisting of various renowned firms like Thortan Tomasetti for structural engineering, PositivEnergy Practise, an energy service firm and other architect firms HOK Architects, GMP Architects and P&T Architects, for building the 606 meters (1988 feet) building within a span of five years. Picture Gallery Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture to Design World’s 4th Tallest Building Construction is scheduled to begin this summer in Wuhan near the meeting of the Yangtze and Han rivers. This skyscraper is a project of Greenland Group, a Shanghai based company which is into the construction of this high profile building. At 119 levels, Wuhan Greenland Center will have 300,000 square meters of floor area. Out of which 200,000 square meter is earmarked for offices, 50,000 square meter for luxury apartments and 45 000 square meter for a grandiose five star hotel. Besides, the building will also house a 27 meter tall private club which will give the onlookers an opportunity to witness the breathtaking views of the city. The building is being designed with many eco friendly systems inbuilt in the design. Some of the important features are the tapered shape of the building and the tripod base being topped by rounded domes. This design has been developed in view of minimizing wind resistance and vortex action of the building, owing to its height. The corners of the tower will be made of curved glasses providing an apparent contrast with the curtained wall, engulfing the entire body of the building. Fissures in the building will be instrumental in venting wind pressure against the condominium. The architects have very consciously included an array of sustainable elements in the design of the building. For water recycling, a water recovery system will be installed which will take water from the hotel laundry, kitchen, and bathrooms and will reuse it for cooling purpose. For a highly efficient lighting system, low energy consuming lights and lamps will be installed. Besides there will also be a day light responsive system which will turn off lights automatically in case of sufficient sun light. For conservation of water low flow plumbing systems will be installed which will ensure conservation of energy and minimization of potable water wastage. The building is still in the designing phase and is expected to come up as a spectacular building with lots of sustainable systems ingrained in designing. Via: Bustler
