A new UK study shows that the fumes emitted by cars may have a devastating impact on honeybees’ ability to find and recognize flowers to use as food. The scientists found that pollutants in diesel destroyed the natural aroma of rapeseed flowers, making their smell so different that bees didn’t even recognize the plants as food. While many are pointing to harsh new pesticides as the cause of honeybee decline around the world, traffic fumes may be one more stressor that is helping to push global bee populations to the brink. BMW is going electric in a big way. The German luxury vehicle maker announced that it is going to manufacture a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of each of its models. BMW has begun production of its first all-electric, zero emissions vehicle — i3 city car — with European deliveries set to start in November. Next up will be the i8 sports car, which is a plug-in hybrid currently under development. After these two electric vehicle launches, BMW will begin making electric versions of its regular lineup, starting with a plug-in hybrid electric version of the X5 SUV. Aliko Dangote is not only a cement tycoon, a billionaire, and the the richest man in Africa, he is also a philanthropist who plans to spend some of his money constructing a new 1,000-bed hospital in Nigeria. This incredible gift of health will be the largest such facility in the northern state of Kano. To be named the Mariya Sanusi Dantata Ultramodern Theater Complex, the new hospital will be situated near a wing of the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in Kano. Dangote made the announcement on Tuesday while laying the foundation for a $12 million theater and diagnostic complex which his charity organization, the Dangote Foundation , that he is also building.
