The year 2014 was a record-breaking one for the solar power industry around the world, and here in the U.S. we were installing new solar systems at a rate faster than ever before. New data from GTM Research shows a new solar system was powered on every 2.5 minutes last year—which is, if nothing else a huge leap from past numbers, such as one system installed every two hours in 2004. Three hundred Stanford University professors have called on their university to divest itself from all financial interest in fossil fuels . In a letter sent to Stanford’s president and board of trustees on Sunday the professors say it’s the university’s obligation to rid itself of fossil fuel interests and thus “practice what it preaches.” They say doing so would show an effort to help slow climate change, which would help create a better future for students of the university. The largest solar plant in the United States is officially fully operational. The Topaz Solar project in San Louis Obispo County, California completed its final 40-megawatt phase last month, making it the first 500-plus megawatt farm in the country. All told, the project now includes an astounding 9 million solar panels across 9.5 million square miles and generates 550-megawatts of clean, solar energy.
