There’s a lot of debate about whether or not solar power could feasibly power the entire country. A new report by Environment America and a breakdown by Treehugger’s Micheal Graham Richard is putting the final nail in the naysayers coffin. According to the information, the United States could not only power itself on clean solar energy, but it could easily power itself one hundred times over in the not too distant future. An astonishing one out of every five households in Australia is now relying on solar energy, a new report from the Australian Bureau of Statistic (ABS) reveals. Just 3 years ago only 5 percent of homes used rooftop solar panels or solar water heating , but today a full 19 percent do. To put that into perspective, by most accounts , fewer than .4 percent of homes in the US rely on solar. A new study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) states that the US has the technology and the solar capacity to power every home across the states with energy from the sun ! Researchers found that the US has the ability to make and deploy systems able to generate as much as 200,000 GW of energy – or about 400,000 TWh of energy annually. To give that some perspective, 1 GW is what a standard nuclear power plant can generate, and it’s enough to power approximately 700,000 homes. In short, if the US put its mind to it, it could power the entire country with solar power . Read the rest of NREL Report Shows Existing Solar Technology Could Power the Entire US! With China becoming the world’s leader of solar cells and panels , it was hoped that their mass production would help bring down global prices. However, in order to aid domestic manufacturing, the US has hampered such progress by imposing tariffs of as much as 250 percent on Chinese-made solar cells. While the decision was made to protect US solar production against foreign competition, it is expected that it will ultimately raise PV cell prices and hurt the domestic renewable energy industry.
