Art and design studio Aether & Hemera have created Pollinators, an interactive installation that uses mixed media to raise awareness about the belief that pollinator populations are in continual decline . Currently installed in England’s DLI Museum , the artwork comprises ten interactive birdhouses connected by cables arranged in the shape of a tree. Each birdhouse has a speaker that can be triggered to make sound using a mobile phone or tablet. The installation will remain at the DLI Museum in Durham until January 10, 2016, after which it will be shown at Central Art Gallery, Ashton-under-Lyne and later at Towneley Hall in Burnley. + Aether & Hemera The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. The sleek Pen Uno is one of the most minimal writing instruments in the world

Pen Uno is an extremely minimal pen designed to be both a pleasure to write with and beautiful to look at. At only 5.3mm (7/32in) in wide, it is one of the slimmest pens ever manufactured, yet it is very comfortable to use because its holding barrel is slightly wider. This barrel also serves as a twisting cap that protects the pen tip when not in use. Pen Uno is precision-machined out of space-grade aluminum and anodized in four distinct colors: space grey, silver, gold, and rose gold. Pen Uno uses the widely available Hi-Tec-C Coleto gel ink cartridge. This cartridge writes exactly the same as the regular Hi-Tec-C cartridge but it is much slimmer in diameter because it was designed for a multi-color pen system. Taking advantage of this super slim cartridge, the designers were able to construct what is one of the most minimal pens ever designed. + Pen Uno on Kickstarter

How do you get people to slow down in a bustling city like London? This kind and charming urban intervention may do the trick. Online magazine and creative studio Thoughtful has planted small origami envelopes all over the city, each with a penny and a note inside, to encourage random acts of thoughtfulness across London. The initiative asks people to pay it forward by adding their own notes and donations in the envelope in hopes of donating the packages to good causes. Anyone can get involved with the initiative too. Thoughtful is open-sourcing their design , which can be found on their website. + Thoughtful The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Want to see your story on Inhabitat ? Comments Off on Are Mangroves The Solution to Urban Sustainability in Asia?

Mangrove forests are some of the most carbon-rich habitats on earth, but unintentional urban shifts continue to threaten these sensitive and essential environments . Policies to conserve and restore these ecosystems can provide high carbon benefits, especially in areas where mangrove loss has been most dramatic. Urban designers have noticed the threats to mangrove populations and are developing solutions that not only restore lost mangrove cover, but honor and create amenities around them. Cities like Hong Kong and Shenzhen are making dramatic improvements in their mangrove forest health.
