Every year countless wine and alcohol bottles end up in landfills along with tons of premium hardwood. Seattle-based ChicWatts reclaims and upcycles these materials into unique, artistic lighting solutions designed to brighten up any space. By combining eye-catching metal and glass, these sculptural lights are reminiscent of another era, and serve to be seen as much as they illuminate. The American made lights wear their brass and iron fittings as a tribute to the industrial history of the country and were named a finalist in the Martha Stewart Made in America competition. Their “Mother Nature meets Steampunk” designs can be customized on demand and many models include secondary features such as built-in USB ports. Currently, ChicWatts eco-friendly lights are already available in the U.S. and Asia and can be shipped to the EU. + ChicWatts Images via ChicWatts Facebook Page The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Since we last featured Lamp Revival , the studio’s Rockland, Maine-based designer Maurice Klapfish has continued to transform salvaged materials into unique light sculptures. His latest works repurpose heavy scrap metal discards—much of which has been reclaimed from over 20 pounds of landfill—into steampunk-inspired lighting art. Klapfish also works with upcycling discarded sports equipment into novel lighting, such as his recycled sports lamp made with a Xenith X2 football helmet tilt mounted on a deconstructed and flattened Wilson NFL football. + Lamp Revival The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Once focused on enforcing state laws that prevented  homeless folks from illegally camping on public lands, out-of-work Oregon Park Ranger Raymond Gulley is now trying to do something positive about the problem with the Warmpod. Warmpod is a small portable modular emergency structure that anyone can build, empowering communities to help keep homeless people warm in the winter and to prepare for natural disasters. The Warmpod is built for extreme weather and can withstand high winds. The sidewalls are made from fir with rigid foam insulation that can bounce back when stressed. The floor module has a unique “inner lip” which directs moisture outside of the unit and keeps wall modules in place. Once completed, the Warmpod is made of 6 interlocking modules that can easily fit in the back of a pickup and be assembled by one person, to help make a difference no matter where it is needed. + Warmpod
