Dutch designer Etiënne Reijnders has taken it upon himself to turn abandoned, run-down shopping carts into elegant chairs and sofas. The process involves sawing, cutting, folding, forging and welding the steel. Once finished, the pieces are galvanized and fitted with new plastic parts. The end-product is an extremely strong and very usable piece of furniture that is both airy and original. The shopping cart chair loses a minimum of material: only the wheels and 0.5 kg of metal. Reijnders upcycles an everyday object to exclusive luxury furniture, and because of the new function and status, an eternal life lays ahead. + Etiënne Reijnders The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Furniture Designer Hongtao Zhou Resurrected a Creepy, Dripping Zombie Chair

Zombie chair! Out for your wood scraps! Oozing sawdust and pure carnage! Designer Hongtao Zhou , whom  we found playing with ice  a while ago, decided to channel the walking dead on a broken, abandoned chair he found on the street in Madison, Wisconsin. The result: a fiendish, dripping zombie chair, risen from the swamp and demanding the chance to sit in your living room looking creepy. Zhou created the drippy effect with wood scraps and sawdust (and probably some monster blood and glue). Expect this chair to show up on your front porch on Halloween night, demanding all the sweet linseed oil you can muster. + Hongtao Zhou Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: “green furniture” , environmental art , furniture design , halloween , halloween decorations , halloween furniture , Hongtao Zhou , Hongtau Zhou , monster blood , recycled chair , repurposed furniture , sawdust , undead , undead chair , upcycled chair , upcycled furniture , zombie , zombie chair , zombies

Artist and designer Daan Roosegaarde  and producer Heijmans Infrastructure have debuted their test drive of  Smart Highways , a sustainable road system for safer driving, on a highway   i n Oss in the Netherlands. Roosegaarde’s design put  solar-powered Glowing Lines along the edge of highway N329, providing drivers with three edge strips of green light along their drive. During the day, the lines “charge up” with solar energy, and at night they can glow for up to eight hours, illuminating the route and keeping cars safely on the road. The first test was a success, spurring the project to extend to other areas of the Netherlands.
