Australian architecture firm Alexander Symes has given an old building a new lease on life by repurposing its materials into a beautiful new home. Although the old structure was completely demolished, the architect – inspired by a “closed-loop zero-waste” ethos – decided to rescue the materials and implement them in the a house. Located in Blackheath, Australia, the 1,100-square-foot Upcycle House is a three-bedroom, two-bath family home with a large living area. The design team worked on the philosophy of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it and if it is broke, fix it” to sustainably build out the home’s exterior and interior with upcycled materials . Related: Lendager Arkitekter Unveils Incredible House Made Entirely From Recycled Materials The home is reinforced with insulated brick, and a solar pergola installed over the entrance pulls double duty as a sun shade and energy generator. Repurposed railway sleepers were used to create a walkway to the home’s sculptural entrance, where unique tile work gives the impression of an open, broken gap in the wall. The home’s interior is heavily influenced by Scandinavian design with clean simple spaces with a touch of whimsy throughout. The layout was strategically optimized to take advantage of the building’s East-West orientation, which gives the home optimal daylight, and reduces energy consumption . The living space floors feature colorful recycled tile mosaics that contrast nicely with the all-white walls. Ample bookshelves and hidden storage areas help residents avoid clutter. + Alexander Symes Architect Photography by Barton Taylor

The studio sits on a vineyard in Sebastopol , blending with the surroundings thanks to its vernacular architecture. The restored 2500 square foot building shelters an artist studio, office and storage building, and was clad using the old barn’s wood. Its inverted gabled-roof adds a contemporary twist, while enhancing the interiors with double height areas – making it perfect for exhibiting the owner’s works. A contrasting modern structure shaped like a white amoeba flows outward from the main building, creating additional living space. Pockets of green flourish on the floor, and the interiors receive plenty of daylight through a skylight placed above a scissor-beam ceiling. Right on the edge, glazed sliding doors bring the outdoors in quite literally — cats, dogs and chicken are very welcome to roam free inside. + Mork-Ulnes Architects Via Blog Gessato Photos by  Bruce Damonte  and Grant Harder

Kaplan always had an eye for upcycling, even before it was a trend. He told Inhabitat, “I travel a lot around the world, and since I was a child I was creative about making things from other things,” he said, “I would walk down the street and find things and think, ‘What can I do with this?’ It could be an abandoned tree limb, a box or even a book.” When Kaplan finally had his own apartment, he realized that all his dreams for creative upcycling could come into fruition. Instead of dropping big bucks at IKEA , he gradually furnished his entire home with found treasures. He fashioned a coffee table from abandoned wood scraps and a piece of glass, replete with draw storage and rope pulls. Wall shelving was achieved with antique army boxes and piles of old books. An abandoned window frame that Kaplan discovered in the garbage was reborn as a spectacular photograph display of a carousel in Dumbo, Brooklyn. And a retired florescent ceiling panel was transformed into artful wall lighting, Kaplan glossing over the lamp with a transparent photographic overlay. RELATED: 10 inspiring upcycled designs that will make you think twice before tossing anything The pièce de ré·sis·tance, however, is Kaplan’s lush green wall . Made from scrap wood, chicken wire, old olive oil cans and a variety of plant species, his rustic statement piece invites magnificent green life indoors. Kaplan went to great lengths to improve his dwelling with minimal use of new objects and materials. He even renovated his own bathroom with vintage tiles and a handmade lamp crafted from wire. The kitchen seating nook was constructed from wood and adorned with kitschy antique signs. This kind of artful repurposing has the power to inspire anyone. The next time you’re strolling down a city street, you may want to keep your eyes open – a treasure trove of endless possibilities awaits. + Or Kaplan + Vibe Israel Images © Or Kaplan

The makers at DesignLibero have developed a brilliant new way to upcycle plastic bottles into beautiful home decor. Using 3D-printing technology, the designers have fashioned this intricate shell customized to fit perfectly over a 0.5 or 1 liter PET water or soft drink bottle. The shell can be screwed easily onto a bottle just like a cap, making any bottle magically disappear under its mesh. The vases are now available in several styles on Make it LEO and Tessa’s Curated Boutique . + DesignLibero Images via Claudio Morelli The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Now that mobile phones are ubiquitous, it seems like telephone booths have nowhere to go but the way of the dodo. While many governments and civilians may be fine with dumping those booths at the landfill, artist Martin Angelov shows that outdated structures can be given new life with just a bit of creative elbow grease. Angelov transformed parts of an old telephone booth into a chair in a project described as “a protest against hundreds of abandoned telephone booths in the era of mobile communications.” + Martin Angelov The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader.
