If you’re running three companies and selling hats and flamethrowers in your spare time, why wouldn’t you then build a cyborg dragon? This sentence could only apply to Elon Musk — and that’s what he said he’s doing on Twitter . His statement naturally sparked a flurry of questions about whether or not he’ll actually construct the fanciful creature. Oh btw I’m building a cyborg dragon — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 25, 2018 Yesterday afternoon, Musk said some music sounded great riding his cyborg, capping off his tweet with a dragon emoji. About ten minutes later he followed up on that tweet with, “Oh btw I’m building a cyborg dragon.” Sounds great riding my cyborg ? — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 25, 2018 Related: Elon Musk warns AI could become an ‘immortal’ digital dictator Naturally, the Internet had a blast with that one. Twitter user @illbzo1 told Musk it was about time, and Musk agreed , saying the market was underserved. The Game of Thrones Twitter account commanded Musk to “ bend the knee to House Targaryen ,” signing off with the hashtag #Dracarys, and Musk was quick to fire back, saying, “Don’t make me use my space lasers.” Don’t make me use my space lasers … — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 26, 2018 So Musk is definitely kidding, right? Of course, he’s known to have a great sense of humor . And The Independent said perhaps he’s obliquely referring to SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. But they also pointed out Musk has a habit of making ridiculous concepts aired on Twitter into reality. A tweet about Los Angeles traffic morphed into a company that’s finished a segment of tunnel in LA and has verbal approval to build a Hyperloop between Washington, D.C. and New York City. After selling thousands of Boring Company hats, Musk said on Twitter they’d turn to flamethrowers and made good on that idea too . But a cyborg dragon? We can’t wait to see if Musk follows through on this one. + Elon Musk Twitter Via The Independent Image via arbitragery on Flickr

Comments Off on Macron says what Trump won’t and urges action on climate change in US Congress

While it seemed like French President Macron was cozying up to President Trump in Washington DC as the special guest of honor for the first State Dinner of the Trump Administration , the two leaders are an ocean apart on the issue of climate change. “Some people think that securing current industries and their jobs is more urgent than transforming our economies to meet the challenge of global change.” Macron said in a speech to the US Congress. “In the long run, we will have to face the same realities. We’re just citizens of the same planet.” In his speech to Congress, Macron acknowledged the economic concerns regarding the initial cost of abandoning fossil fuels. “I hear [those worries]. . . but we must find a transition to a low-carbon economy,” said Macron. “What is the meaning of our life, really, if we work and live destroying the planet, while sacrificing the future of our children?” Macron urged the United States to understand that there is “no Planet B,” that the world must work together to solve the problem or all will suffer. Despite the current atmosphere in Washington, Macron remained optimistic that the disagreements between France and the United States, historic allies, would someday be resolved. ““I am sure one day the United States will come back and join the Paris agreement,” said Macron. President Trump has notably called climate change a hoax created by the Chinese, withdrawn the United States from the Paris agreement, and increased tariffs on Chinese solar panels, therefore increasing the cost of solar power in the United States . Trump also picked Scott Pruitt, a former Republican Congressman from Oklahoma and a climate-change skeptic, as head Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency , an executive appointment that was approved 52-46 by the United States Senate. Get your credit card ready, because Elon Musk announced that Tesla’s Solar Roof tiles are available to order starting today – and the Tesla Solar Roof order page just went live. Musk said that the smooth black and textured version of the tiles will be available for order today, with other styles following next year. Musk made the announcement today, as he so often does, on Twitter ,  stating that installation will start this year in the US. He added that Tuscan and French Slate will be available in 6 months. Orders and installation overseas won’t be available until next year. Tesla solar glass roof orders open this afternoon. I think it will be great. Comments Off on Elon Musk supports former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State

Elon Musk is a well-known clean energy advocate – but he shocked many followers this week when he threw his support behind former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Acknowledging his support could be startling, Musk took to Twitter to say the oil mogul actually ” supports a carbon tax .” https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/824010489449431040 The Economist tweeted a December 2016 article titled ” Give Rex a chance ” on the occasion of Tillerson’s narrow approval as Secretary of State. Musk responded to the article, saying “This may sound surprising coming from me, but I agree with The Economist. Rex Tillerson has the potential to be an excellent Sec of State.” Related: Rex Tillerson says Trump is wrong about climate change Naturally Musk followers were quick to ask him why he’d support Tillerson, and he said , “Rex is an exceptionally competent executive, understands geopolitics and knows how to win for his team. His team is now the USA. I share The Economist’s opinion that he should be given the benefit of the doubt unless his actions prove otherwise.” Musk also pointed to statements from Tillerson’s confirmation hearing where Tillerson said the United States should “maintain its seat at the table in the conversation on how to address threats of climate change . They do require a global response.” https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/824149662366126087 Several hours after he sparked the conversation Musk tweeted , “Rex Tillerson supports a carbon tax. This is what is really needed to move the needle.” He included a link to a December 2016 Bloomberg article , which back then noted Musk and Tillerson agreed on a carbon tax as the “best tool for fighting climate change.” It remains to be seen if Musk’s backing will be justified and if Tillerson will follow through on a carbon tax. Comments Off on Rogue national park tweets climate change facts in defiance of Donald Trump

Whoever runs the Twitter account for Badlands National Park is a national hero. After the Trump Administration imposed a social media blackout on the National Park Service and the Environmental Protection Agency, Badlands Park fired off a series of tweets that flew in the face of president Donald Trump’s stated beliefs on climate change – only to have those messages removed from the account just hours later. On Tuesday Badlands National Park’s Twitter account was flush with statements such as “Today, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher than at any time in the last 650,000 years. #climate” and “Burning one gallon of gasoline puts nearly 20 lbs of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. #climate” As Time notes, the tweets came in the aftermath of a brief suspension of all National Park accounts. The act required the U.S. Department of the Interior to suspend operations of its Twitter account after the National Park Services official account retweeted two posts that didn’t reflect well on the Trump Administration. According to Recode , the Park Service issued an apology that said the tweets were a mistake, which apparently earned back its Twitter privileges. And while it might have displeased the president, the posts helped the NPS Twitter account jump from 7,000 on Monday to 60,000 on Tuesday. Trump told reporters at the Oval Office he planned to “renegotiate some of the terms” on the projects, but that he would seek to “get that pipeline built,” while issuing other executive actions requiring the pipelines be built in the U.S. with U.S. materials. + Badands National Park Twitter Via Time and Recode Images via Stefan Fussan and Recode

US House Science Committee tweets climate denial propaganda

Comments Off on US House Science Committee tweets climate denial propaganda

Last week, the official Twitter account for the US House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology tweeted a link to an inaccurate and hyperbolic article published by Breitbart – the far-right, white-nationalist-supporting news outlet that spawned Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s chief strategist. The tweet proclaimed: “Global Temperatures Plunge. Icy Silence from Climate Alarmists.” It should go without saying that the linked article was deeply misleading . The piece was based on a misleading Daily Mail story by climate denier David Rose, which used satellite measurements of atmospheric temperatures over land only (completely ignoring the oceans that make up 70% of the planet) to argue that global temperatures had actually dropped over the course of 2016. Of course, if you look at the complete dataset that Rose cherry-picked his information from, you’ll clearly see a long-term warming trend, with 2016 set to become the hottest year in recorded human history. This isn’t the first time the House Science Committee has tweeted dubious material. Just the day before the Breitbart tweet, the account posted a tweet accusing a climate change support group of valuing “politics & emotion over facts.” It’s not the first time the account has tweeted links to anti-climate articles from Breitbart, either. Related: Donald Trump denies saying “climate change is a Chinese hoax”- but his own Twitter account contradicts him It’s deeply troubling that an official US government account would be posting such biased and poorly-sourced articles to begin with, but the fact that it’s the “science” committee makes matters even more frightening. If our legislators can’t be bothered to understand the science underlying important environmental policy , how can we be expected to take effective action against climate change? Unfortunately, with the Trump administration readying to take office, this problem is likely to get worse before it gets better. Via Ars Technica Images via William Warby and Joakim Berndes

Leonardo DiCaprio gave Ivanka Trump a DVD of his climate change documentary

Comments Off on Leonardo DiCaprio gave Ivanka Trump a DVD of his climate change documentary

In a gracious attempt to help America’s next first family get a firm grip on the reality of climate change, actor and activist Leonardo DiCaprio gifted Ivanka Trump a DVD copy of his recently released environmental documentary , “Before the Flood.” The future first daughter is primed to be a strong inside force in the Trump administration, with the 35-year-old and her husband Jared Kushner acting as key advisers to her father, President-elect Donald Trump. Ivanka has already been vocal about women’s issues, authoring a book on the topic, and there is reason to suspect she may have some influence over the Trump administration’s environmental policies as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9xFFyUOpXo&feature=youtu.be Reportedly, DiCaprio met privately with the president-elect’s eldest daughter to discuss environmental issues, which the actor has become a champion of in recent years through his nonprofit foundation and honorary position as UN Messenger of Peace. Media speculation has already toyed with the notion that Ivanka could become “the most powerful first daughter in history,” and in his capacity as an activist, DiCaprio grasped the opportunity to help educate her about the severity of climate change, something her father has mostly dismissed. During the meeting, according to aids from both sides, DiCaprio handed over a DVD of Before the Flood, the documentary he produced with National Geographic and released in October. Related: Elon Musk and Leonardo DiCaprio discuss climate issues in Before the Flood documentary The film streamed for free for one week in November on YouTube after its limited theatre debut in Los Angeles and New York City, and can now be accessed online through various platforms . The film paints the broad strokes of the effects of climate change and the importance of altering human behaviors in order to ward off the destruction of our planet. With any luck, DiCaprio’s personal gift will shed some light on issues that the president-elect has been denying for years. The real question is: will Ivanka become the Trump family’s voice of reason where climate change is concerned? Via GQ Images via United Nations
