Zaha Hadid Architects and their Japanese partner, Nikken Sekkei , have withdrawn from the competition for the 2020 Olympic Stadium in Tokyo due to the failure in securing a construction company. Zaha Hadid Architects had won the competition in 2012, beating 45 other entries, but the futuristic design has been scrapped by Japanese minister Shinzo Abe after the construction costs rose to almost twice the initial estimate. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pulled the plug on Zaha Hadid’s 2020 Olympic stadium due to escalating costs. The government’s latest estimates put the stadium at $2.1 billion—a cost that was subject to rise and would have made it the most expensive stadium ever built. “We have decided to go back to the start on the Tokyo Olympics-Paralympics stadium plan, and start over from zero,” Abe told reporters today .
