Aside from building a zillion new stores in China, Apple is making other commitments to the nation’s economy and environment. This week, Apple’s chief exec Tim Cook announced the company’s plans to green its operations in China by making renewable energy a high priority, similar to what the company has done in the United States and Europe. Apple plans to create 200 megawatts worth of solar projects across country, which is enough to offset the greenhouse gas emissions emitted from the company’s entire China-based supply chain. Apple has announced the next phase of their plans to protect the world’s environment. The iPhone maker is partnering with the World Wildlife Fund in China to create sustainable forests from which the company will source wood to become product packaging. This is similar to the efforts Apple has begun in the United States, with the recent purchase of 36,000 acres of forest land in Maine and North Carolina. By taking control of the source of raw materials, Apple hopes to keep a handle on carbon emissions throughout the manufacturing process. Apple has just announced plans to construct two new data centers in Europe, and like all current Apple data centers, the facilities will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy . Constructed at a total cost of $1.9 billion, the data centers will each measure 166,000 square meters (545,000 square feet) and will power the company’s iTunes App Store, iMessage, Maps and Siri services. Photo via Shutterstock Apple released its annual supplier responsibility report this week, which detailed a number of labor and environmental violations in the company’s supply chain. The most troubling revelation, and the one that is getting the most media attention, is the discovery of multiple cases of child labor, as the internal audit found that 106 children were employed at 11 factories that produced Apple products in the past year. But that isn’t all; the audit also found that many of the company’s suppliers failed to properly store and handle hazardous waste, and that over 100 facilities failed to recycle or properly dispose of hazardous waste .
