It’s here: the semi truck that we’ve all been waiting for.  Tesla just unveiled its new electric 500-mile-range Semi Truck, which could revolutionize the transportation world. Semi trailer trucks move goods all over the country, and without them we’d never get our stuff as fast as we do now, but they come with one big disadvantage – emissions. Today’s trucks are powered by dirty diesel engines that emit a large portion of the harmful pollutants in our air, but that could soon change. Not only does the Tesla Semi have a driving range of 500 miles, but it can also reach 60 mph in five seconds without a trailer, which is a fraction of the time that it takes for a comparable diesel truck . With an 80,000 pound load, Tesla estimates that the truck will reach 60 mph in 20 seconds, which normally takes a diesel truck about a minute. The Tesla Semi requires no shifting or clutching for smooth acceleration and deceleration, and its regenerative braking recovers 98% of kinetic energy to the battery, giving it a basically infinite brake life. Even with a 500 mile driving range, drivers will need to find a place to recharge their Tesla Semi, so Tesla has announced new Megachargers that will add about 400 miles in 30 minutes. Inside the Tesla Semi’s cabin is designed specifically around the driver, with full standing room inside, and a centered driver position for better visibility. The driver also has two touchscreen displays positioned symmetrically on both sides that provide access to navigation, blind spot monitoring and electronic data logging. The Tesla Semi can also travel in a convoy, where one or several Semi trucks will be able to autonomously follow a lead Semi, making it even easier for the driver to travel long distances. According to Elon Musk, jackknifing is impossible thanks to independent motors on each will that can adjust torque as needed, and the roll risk is greatly reduced. It can even function of two of the motors fail for some reason. They are also more reliable, because Tesla guarantees them for a million miles, and the brake pads don’t need replacing. There is also no transmission to worry about. Best of all, according to Musk, is his favorite feature: thermonuclear explosion-proof glass. Tesla changed the auto industry when it debuted the Model S, but can it do the same thing with its Semi Truck? When the Model S debuted, Tesla didn’t really have any big rivals, but the Tesla Semi Truck already has a growing list of competitors, including Bosch, Cummins , and Daimler. There are even a few start ups that are trying to get into the segment. At the event, Musk also revealed that Tesla is releasing an updated Roadster. It will be the fastest production car ever made and will have a top speed of 250 miles per hour with a range of 620 miles. You can reserve the Tesla Semi for $5,000 and production is expected to start in 2019. Images @Tesla + Tesla

Poppies, dune evening primrose, lupine, and other wildflowers are blanketing California in a super bloom so immense you can see it from space. After an especially wet winter, most of the state is finally drought-free – and it’s flourishing with a colorful floral array that spans miles and miles. California received above-average rainfall this year, and the state is being rewarded with several distinct super blooms. Los Padres National Forest, Carrizo Plain National Monument, and Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge are all exhibiting spectacular super blooms that can be glimpsed from space thanks to Planet Labs , a company offering stunning satellite images of Earth . Related: Death Valley springs to life with millions of flowers in rare ‘super bloom’ March saw the height of the bloom, but in some snow-covered areas like Lassen Volcanic National Park and the High Sierra, wildflowers might not arrive until June or July – so there’s still time to see the natural beauty. If you’re hoping to glimpse California’s super bloom in person, Visit California put together a list of where and when to see spring wildflowers. The California Department of Parks and Recreation also has a site with information on where and when you can see the blooms, along with phone numbers to check if the landscape is in bloom and which types of flowers are showing. Planet Labs was launched by a team of former NASA scientists, and they debuted a Planet Explorer Beta tool in March that allows the public to see satellite images for 85 percent of Earth’s terrain. In February they acquired Terra Bella , thesatellite business behind Google Earth – and they now control the world’s biggest fleet of satellites imaging the Earth. Comments Off on Tesla announces plans for world domination: includes trucks, buses and solar power

This week the world noticed that Tesla officially dropped the “Motors” portion of its name, but we had no idea why. Now we may have a reason – Tesla has just unveiled its new master plan, which will see the automaker branch out from just producing electric cars. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that Tesla will soon start building heavy-duty trucks and buses, which will be unveiled as early as next year. In the ” Master Plan Part Deux “, as Elon Musk described it on his website, he also outlines his plan for combining battery technology with solar infrastructure to move the world away from unsustainable fossil fuels. 10 years ago, Elon Musk revealed his master plan for Tesla , which involved first creating a pricey low volume car, the Roadster, which would be followed by a cheaper medium volume car at a lower price, the Model S, ending with an affordable, high volume car, the upcoming Model 3. 10 years ago Tesla even had ambitions to enter the solar power segment, which was solved recently when Tesla announced plans to buy SolarCity . Now Elon Musk has revealed its second master plan in an article on the Tesla blog . Related: Elon Musk aims to build clean energy giant with Tesla’s $2.8 billion bid for SolarCity The new plan sees the expansion of Tesla’s current models, more expansion into the solar segment and even producing heavy-duty trucks, and buses fit for public transit. With the upcoming arrival of the Model 3 , which will be followed by a compact SUV and even an electric pickup, Tesla feels that it will have an electric vehicle in every consumer segment that it needs. Tesla has no plans to build anything cheaper than the Model 3 and instead plans to focus its efforts on a completely different segment as it seeks to promote a sustainable future that is not reliant on fossil fuels. By next year Tesla plans to reveal its first heavy-duty truck and even a high-passenger bus. Tesla says that both vehicles are in the early development stages, but the Tesla Semi will deliver a substantial reduction in the cost of cargo transport, while increasing safety. The Tesla bus will be able to hold more passengers than today’s buses, by eliminating the center aisle and putting seats where there are currently entryways. The bus will also be fully autonomous , which will be able to match the acceleration and braking of other vehicles, thus avoiding the inertial impedance to smooth traffic flow of traditional heavy buses. Elon Musk also details his company’s plans to improve autonomous driving technology to allow for car sharing on a large scale. Here’s how he sums it up in the detailed blog post announcement: So, in short, Master Plan, Part Deux is: Create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments Develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning Enable your car to make money for you when you aren’t using it You can read more about Tesla’s plans here > + Tesla All images @ Tesla
