Forget about foregoing a Tesla solar roof to save money. Elon Musk said his company’s roofs will be cheaper than ordinary roofs. He also said the energy-generating roofs will last longer than typical roofs, so, said the real-life Iron Man, “Why would you get anything else?” At first Tesla solar roofs will be a premium product, according to Bloomberg, as the company’s slate and terra cotta tiles are 20 times more expensive than asphalt singles. But that factor could become irrelevant because of reduced shipping costs. It’s expensive to ship traditional roof tiles because they’re so heavy and fragile. Musk said Tesla’s solar tiles are easier to ship and weigh around a fifth of what regular tiles weigh. Related: Tesla shareholders “overwhelmingly” approve SolarCity merger Tesla’s tile roofs will be cheaper to both manufacture and install, according to Musk, and will provide savings to a homeowner even before energy bill savings. He said ” Electricity is just a bonus.” Not only could Tesla solar roofs ultimately save owners a wad of money, the sleek solar roof design could convince more people to go solar . Musk said, “The key is to make solar look good. We want you to call your neighbors over and say, ‘Check out this sweet roof.'” The solar roofs will be made of tempered glass in four styles: Tuscan, slate, textured, and smooth. The innovative tiles come with solar cells invisible to a casual observer, a color louver film layer to enable the tiles to blend in, and a tempered glass layer. Tesla says the electricity from the roofs can be immediately utilized or stored in a Powerwall battery. The company aims to have their solar roofs available by the summer of 2017; you can sign up for updates here . Via Gizmodo and Bloomberg Images via screenshot and Tesla

Earlier this week Motor Trend named the 2017 Chevy Bolt electric car as its 2017 Car of the Year and Car and Driver recently added it to its Top 10 list. Now the “electric car for the masses” has been named the Green Car of the Year, by the Green Car Journal at the Los Angeles Auto Show . Green Car Journal editors selected the 2017 Bolt for its 238 mile driving range, stylish design, pleasing driving dynamics, and welcome new technologies. The Bolt beat out other contenders like the BMW 330e iPerformance, Chrysler Pacifica, Kia Optima and Toyota Prius Prime. This is also the second year in the row that Chevy has won the award, since last year the second-generation Chevy Volt won the coveted award. “The 2017 Bolt EV is a game-changing electric vehicle that delivers long range at an affordable price,” said Steve Majoros, Marketing Director, Chevrolet Cars & Crossovers. “We’re excited to have the Bolt EV arrive to select dealer showrooms later this year and honored to have it named as Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year®.” Related: 2017 Chevy Bolt gets an EPA-certified 238-mile driving range “From the time modern electric vehicles emerged in the 1990s, limited driving range has presented a core challenge to the commercialization of electric cars affordable to everyday drivers. Bolt overcomes this with its 238-mile battery electric driving range and approachable price, the first production electric car to achieve this milestone,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. The Bolt will start rolling into showrooms in all 50 states by the end of the year with a staring price at $37,500 before any state or federal tax incentives. + Green Car Journal All images @ Chevy
