An explosion of pink has erupted on top of two homes in Europe—one in Avesta, Sweden and the other in Kerava, Finland. Crochet queen Olek unleashed her yarn bombing skills on the two homes as part of the #OurPinkHouse project that brings attention to the plight of refugees and serves as a positive symbol of a brighter future.

The artists are known for large-scale installations . They created a massive ” Valley Curtain ” in Colorado and a large-scale inflatable indoor sculpture in Germany. Works in progress include an oil barrel pyramid made of 410,000 barrels and the Over the River fabric installation that will use 5.9 miles of silvery fabric panels. It has been 40 years since Christo last worked in Italy. ” Modular floating docks ” will be created with 220,000 ” high-density poly-ethylene cubes ” that will be covered in 100,000 square meters of ” shimmering yellow fabric .” The floating walkway will be about three kilometers long, just under two miles. The walkway will allow pedestrians to cross the lake from the town of Sulzano to the town of Peschiera Maraglio on the island of Monte Isola. From there, they can walk over to the small island of San Paolo, which will be framed entirely by the yellow floating walkway. The yellow fabric will continue through the streets Sulzano and Peschiera Maraglio for 1.5 kilometers, just under one mile. The project will be paid for wholly by the sales of Christo’s original pieces of art. Floating Piers will be open to the public for 16 days between June 18 and July 3. After that time, the cubes and fabric will be ” industrially recycled .” + Christo and Jeanne-Claude Photography by Wolfgang Volz ; collages by Christo

Eliasson’s transformative works were commissioned as part of a recurring summer project that previously invited artists including the likes of Jeff Koons and Anish Kapoor . The breathtaking Waterfall Installation cascades down from a height of around 40 meters and was created to realize the plans of Louis XIV’s garden architect, André Le Nôtre, who had wanted to add a grand waterfall to Versailles but never did. Related: Olafur Eliasson launches a gorgeous and affordable handheld solar phone charger “This waterfall reinvigorates the engineering ingenuity of the past. It is as constructed as the court was, and I’ve left the construction open for all to see—a seemingly foreign element that expands the scope of human imagination,” said Eliasson in a press statement. The exhibition’s outdoor installations also include the Fog Assembly, which shoots out a circle of mist, and the Glacial Rock Flour Garden that evokes imagery of retreating glaciers . The palace interior is also transformed with the power of light and mirrors in the works Solar Compression, a suspended mirror ringed with light, and The Curious Museum, an installation that uses mirrors to create large-scale optical illusions . + Olafur Eliasson Via Dezeen Images via Olafur Eliasson

A new hybrid trike called the GinzVelo  aims to radically change the way people travel within cities. The cycle’s inventor Peter Ginzburg calls it a “human-electric hybrid vehicle” or HEH vehicle for short. The contraption relies on a 500 W electric engine to supercharge your pedal power over 30 miles per hour. The main selling point, though, is the range. GinzVelo can travel up to an impressive 100 miles on a single charge. Read the rest of This hybrid human-electric trike can travel up to 100 miles on a single charge

Austrian scientists create a cheap, flexible solar cell just 3 micrometers thick

The age old mineral perovskite has been something of a holy grail in solar cell development; the mineral is abundant, cheap, lightweight, and highly efficient when it comes to absorbing light. It does, however, have one major downside: perovskite is water-soluble. In experiments to utilize the mineral, this has meant solar cells have either been light and degradable or heavier and less efficient. But an effort by researchers at Johannes Kepler University Linz in Austria has created a relatively stable solar cell that is just three micrometers thick and yields 12 percent efficiency.
