Cities all over the world have been working hard to tackle congestion problems in their central districts. Singapore, London, and Stockholm have instituted congestion charges for cars coming into the city center, while hundreds of cities around the world are experimenting with car-free days. In Australia, marine researchers have come up with a smart solution to a really strange problem. A team of scientists at the University of Queensland’s School of Biological Sciences has been trying to study the eating habits of loggerhead sea turtles, which they do by collecting the turtles’ solid waste. Because sea turtles live in, well, the sea, this has not been an easy task. And then a thought occurred to the team: why not use the best poo-collection device out there to tackle the job? That’s right – the researchers fashioned diapers for the turtles to collect samples of their feces before releasing them into the wild. The team upcycled swim shirts from a thrift store to do the job, giving the turtles some pretty eye-catching duds to show off, if only for the amusement to the other turtles involved in the study, since their recycled diapers were removed before the turtles were reintroduced to their ocean homes. The space beneath what is now a nondescript field at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens was once occupied by a luxurious underground home , and some believe that the subterranean residence still exists. The Underground Home was built 15 feet below the ground at the park as part of the 1964 World’s Fair, and was supposed to be destroyed when the event ended. But because it’s impossible to see what is really beneath the ground and there is no known documentation that the demolition actually took place, the home could very well still be down there . According to a new study in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity , your cuddly cat companion might pose some serious health risks, especially to senior citizens.
