The much-anticipated Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System has kicked into action in California’s Mojave Desert. The 3,500 acre facility forms the world’s largest solar thermal energy plant, and has the backing of some major players; Google , NRG Energy , BrightSource Energy and Bechtel have all invested in the project, which is constructed on federally-leased public land. The first of Ivanpah’s three towers is now feeding power into the grid, and once the site is fully operational it will produce 392 megawatts — enough to power 140,000 homes and reduce carbon emissions by 400,000 tons per year. Concentrating solar power companies  Abengoa and BrightSource Energy will soon team up to build the world’s largest solar tower facility in Southern California. The new solar development will be located on federal land, and it’s being facilitated by the Bureau of Land Management. The 500-megawatt Palen Solar Electric Generating System will create 2,000 new construction jobs, and it will produce enough electricity to power 200,000 households. The project was unveiled just hours after Interior Secretary Ken Salazar approved 900 MW of solar development in California . Livestock production is one of the leading contributors to climate change — some studies have shown that it produces more greenhouse gases than driving cars — but have you considered the affect that red meat is having on your body? It has long been known that a diet too rich in red meat can lead to health problems, but now a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health reveals that eating any amount of red meat can increase the chance of premature death. Sounds like it might be time to extend Meatless Mondays to the other six days of the week. Urban bike users will know the ins and outs of preventing beloved bikes from being stolen, and it generally goes that the bigger and bulkier the bike lock , the more secure the bike. But the new, lightweight  Pedal Lock offers a different form of theft deterrence. The brain child of designers Cheng-Tsung Feng and  Yu-Ting Cheng , this lock also functions as a pedal. So, in order to be broken into, the thief has to break the pedal, which ultimately leaves the bike un-rideable for a quick getaway. Image: Enviromission 2625 Feet Tall! Solar towers, which are kind of big funnels that generate electricity by using the fact that hot air rises, are too often forgotten when we discuss solar energy. Solar PV and CSP get all the press, but solar towers have attractive power-generating characteristics and I wish more companies were working on perfecting them. EnviroMission is an Australian company working on that very thing, and they’ve announced that they want to build a gigantic 2625 feet/800 meters solar tower in th… Read the full story on TreeHugger
