Officials are working to determine the impact of a pipeline breach that occurred 10 a.m. Saturday morning, and spilled up to 50,000 gallons of oil  into the Yellowstone River near Glendive, in eastern Montana. This recent spill sits just over 200 miles upriver from the site of a 2011 Exxon Mobil pipeline breach which sent 63,000 gallons of oil into an 85-mile stretch of river and riverbed. It’s been an epic journey for the Solar Impuse airplane and pilots Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard. Two months ago, Piccard departed from the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA, and after making stops in Phoenix, Dallas, St Louis, Cincinnati, and Washington, DC, the solar-powered airplane is scheduled to land at New York’s JFK Airport early Sunday morning with Borschberg at the controls. The arrival in New York marks the end of a symbolic journey across the country, which will serve as preparation for an around-the-world flight that is scheduled for 2015. People have talked about building futuristic airships for zero emissions cargo shipping for a long time, but most of these green blimps remain on the drawing board. One company, SolarShip , has taken the steps to bring its vision of a green shipping future to life, recently completing the initial test flights for its solar helium plane. The prototype blends the concepts of blimp and airplane by placing a blimp lined with solar panels over an airplane cockpit and landing gear, and using solar power to propel the plane into the air. SolarShip plans to build three sizes of this ship: the small Caracal , the mid-size Chui , and the 30-tonne cargo hauler Nanuq . It appears to be the mid-sized Chui in the test flight video below. Solar Impulse Sun-Powered Plane Successfully Completes First International Flight

The totally solar powered Solar Impulse aircraft made its maiden international flight across Europe today, piloted by Andre Borschberg. Slowly but surely, the aircraft flew from western Switzerland and over France and Luxembourg, to an airport in Brussels, Belgium. The Solar Impulse was first tested last summer, with a successful flight circling the skies above Switzerland.
