Are you an aspiring designer with a love of honey? Then have a go at creating a hive fit for urban bee-keeping in the brilliant Midtown Buzz competition from The Architecture Foundation (AF) and Inmidtown . The competition is looking for innovative and functional variations on the traditional beehive that are better suited to producing honey in the city of London (like this awesome flat pack bee crib ) that will not only look great but “will deal with the challenges posed by wind and weather.” Read the rest of Midtown Buzz: Design an Urban Beehive and Support Biodiversity in London Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: bee hive design competition , Bee Hive London , Capital Bee UK , green design , hive design , Inmidtown , Sustainable Competitions , urban bee keeping

Photo credit: Trent Bell The bright red GO Home in Belfast, Maine was recently selected as the LEED for Homes Project of the Year for 2011. Completed by GO Logic , the seemingly simple house packs an impressive renewable energy punch and is a LEED Platinum and Passive House certified residence. Because it is a passive house, the home’s owners will see a 90% reduction in their heating bill, resulting in a cool $300 dollars per year for space heating, while enjoying all the comforts of the super insulated building shell during the winter months. With a roof clad in solar panels, The GO Home is also net zero, creating all the energy on site that it needs to provide heat, hot water and electricity for the home owners who will not see an energy bill for the next 25 years. + GO Logic Homes The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Disposable cups are hardly ever re-used, and they often find their end at the local landfill. So to cut back on this paper waste, six innovative designers in Japan have banded together to save the world from being overrun by paper cups. Using reclaimed cups, the crew has created a honeycomb wall lamp that shines bright, well beyond its stunning and sophisticated modern design.
