Image a world where nobody had to be cold, because energy harnessed from the sun could be used to heat homes for free.  Solar Fire Concentration Ltd  (SFCO) hopes to help supply solar thermal energy to alleviate energy poverty around the world, with a little help from crowdfunding. The Finnish company has launched the Free The Sun campaign , which will help to build their GoSol  solar concentrators around the world. Rather than creating solar energy for electricity, the concentrators will power solar thermal devices, giving usable heat energy to anyone in off-the-grid areas, without using pollution-causing charcoal and wood. Johannesburg-based architecture firm Architecture for a Change helped to create a low-cost community bakery in the Zandspruit region. Comprised of several friends who met at school, the firm is dedicated to setting new boundaries in the world of design, and working towards positive social change. This bakery project involved  extensive community involvement;  from collecting used glass bottles to  manufacturing bricks from said bottles. A parabolic  solar oven was created to produce baked goods, which can now be sold from the bakery, thus providing both new  job  opportunities and food to the community. + Architecture for a Change The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader.
