The XXII Winter Olympics are upon us, and over 6,000 athletes are competing from 85 countries in front of thousands of spectators – but the story behind the scenes is every bit as interesting as the athletic prowess on display. At a cost of $51 billion, the Sochi Games are the most expensive Olympics to date, and they took an immense amount of engineering to put on – from transportation systems and housing for athletes and coaches to state of the art venues fit for the highest level of competition. Take a look at this infographic by the New Jersey Institute of Technology for a closer look at the planning and construction that went into this year’s Olympic Games. + New Jersey Institute of Technology The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in America, and countries around the world are quickly following suit. One thing most health and nutrition experts can agree on is that there’s no one solution for rapidly growing obesity rates—it’s a problem that must be tackled simultaneously on multiple fronts. While some fight to eliminate sugary drinks , increase fruit and vegetable intake , or reduce portion sizes , Hollywood-based 5+Design is working to combat obesity with its approach to architecture and landscape design. Inhabitat recently sat down with 5+Design’s Michael Ellis to learn more about anti-obesity architecture, and how the built environment can get people to adopt healthy habits without having to think about it. Image via Shutterstock When crime rates dropped sharply and unexpectedly across the United States during the 1990s, many were left baffled at the precipitous plunge. Though city officials may be quick to credit police efforts, there’s another theory gaining momentum. According to Lauren Wolf’s new article for Chemical and Engineering News , studies show that lead exposure may have caused spikes in criminal activity. The toxic substance was banned and regulated in the 1970s, which could account for the drop in violent crime. While Sochi’s security forces are on high alert against potential terrorist attacks, there’s a different kind of horror sweeping the Russian city streets. In preparation for the Olympic Games , the city officials are determined to get rid of Sochi’s massive stray dog population and has reportedly turned to mass killings as the cheapest and most efficient solution.
