As the sea level rises and storms become more intense due to the effects of climate change, a new study predicts that damage to coastal cities will cost $1 trillion every year by 2050. The research, which is published in the August 18 edition of the journal Nature Climate Change , states that areas along the edges of Asia and North America are the most vulnerable. In the United States, New York, New Orleans, and Miami are singled out as being at high risk. The average person sleeps around eight hours a night — which amounts to a third of your life spent in bed. But despite the amount of time that we find ourselves tucked under our covers, most of us don’t give much thought to the place we plant our bodies when night falls (or when a nap calls). While it’s well-known that getting enough sleep is vital to our health and our ability to function effectively, many of us don’t consider the fact that the quality of sleep we get also plays an important role. One way to improve your night’s sleep is to invest in a high-quality 100% natural mattress. One of our favorites here at Inhabitat is by Coco-Mat , a family-owned, eco-minded company producing  sustainable beds designed for the deepest of slumbers. Each of their beds is made from multiple layers of natural materials that provide optimal, elastic support to the human body, without the use of metal springs. The eco-friendly company only utilizes natural materials from renewable sources, such as coco fiber, natural rubber, wool, cotton, sea weed, horsehair, silk, linen, wood and goose down (read: no toxic chemicals or retardants ). Established in 1989, Coco-Mat has developed a global following – and they recently set up shop right in the heart of New York City ! Interface is Creating Recycled Carpet Using Discarded Fishing Nets

Fishing net photo from Shutterstock The UN reports that about 10 percent of all marine trash is made up of discarded fishing gear, and while some programs have sought to clean up the waste, flooring manufacturer Interface had an even better idea: making carpet using recycled fishing nets. Carpet manufacturers use a lot of nylon to produce their goods, and what better place to get that nylon than from discarded fishing nets, which are made from the same material? It’s all part of Interface’s Mission Zero, a goal to be environmentally neutral by 2020. 10 Design recently unveiled renders of its futuristic Galaxy Yabao Hi-Tech Enterprises Headquarter Park , which is designed to integrate into the natural landscape of its site in Shenzhen, China. The design is also an examination of the concept of moving “beyond neutrality” on a large-scale, and it incorporates a series of sustainable building strategies. The buildings are designed with facades that neutralize air pollution 24 hours a day, an algae system that produces oxygen, organic fertilizer, and cleans grey water, and a series of subterranean chambers that naturally cool outside air and push it into a series of outdoor courtyards. The buildings take full advantage of technologies that help shape the temperature and air quality of their micro-climate. + 10 Design The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. We know this sounds insane, but Dutch researchers working with the Forensic Genomics Consortium in the Netherlands claim to have just created bulletproof skin from goat milk. The researchers report that they genetically modified a goat to produce milk rich in the same protein that makes silk spiders’ fibers so strong. Apparently, the researchers’ plan is to eventually introduce this protein into the human genome so that we can all be bulletproof. Don’t worry, we are fully on board with your confusion. There’s a photo of the “skin” after the jump. Note: We aren’t making this up.
