Bike sharing programs are great, but pedaling up San Francisco ‘s steep hills can be a pain. And car sharing is cool, but finding a parking space in the city can be tough. Enter  Scoot Networks , an electric scooter-sharing service that will let you power up those hills and park virtually anywhere without using a drop of gas. The service, which is modeled after car-sharing businesses, launched today in San Francisco with a fleet of 60 vehicles. To use the scooters, users simply plug a smartphone into the dashboard, and a Scoot app on the phone activates the bike. Normally luxury and sharing aren’t words we mention in the same sentence. Those who can afford it pay millions to have their own cars, jets, and yachts – precisely so they don’t have to share with anyone. Yet, in Vilamoura, the largest luxury tourist complex in Europe, sharing has suddenly become fashionable to some of the world’s wealthiest tourists. This Portuguese resort town just launched a new public bike sharing program that will allow residents to see the coast without a car. Fans of the automatic Roomba vacuum cleaner will love the new Honda Miimo robotic lawn mower . The Honda Miimo lawn mower functions just like the Roomba , but instead of keeping your carpet and floors clean, the Miimo ensures that your lawn is always beautifully cut. Once it’s set up, the Miimo requires very little input from you, and best of all, it’s self-charging. The device constantly monitors the levels of its own  lithium-ion battery and automatically returns to its docking station when it needs to recharge. New York City Bike Share Program Will Have 10,000 Bikes, 600 Stations

Comments Off on New York City Bike Share Program Will Have 10,000 Bikes, 600 Stations

Last year, we heard that New York City was considering a huge bike sharing program and now it’s becoming a reality. New details have been released about the program and it’s just as big as had been hoped. There will be about 600 stations with 10,000 bikes and the program could be up and running by next summer. The stations will be widespread, covering the Upper East and West sides all the way down to the tip of Manhattan and then across the East River into Brooklyn as far as Greenpoint and Crown Heights. The city has chosen Alta Bike Share to install and operate the system. Alta operates bike share programs in Washington, D.C., Boston and Portland, but the New York system will dwarf those systems by a few thousand bikes, making it the largest in the country. Above is a video featuring the Capital Bikeshare program in D.C. The program will allow for 24-hour, multi-day or annual subscriptions as well as shorter rentals charged by the half-hour. Monthly subscriptions will be cheaper than a monthly MetroCard. Bike share programs have had varying degrees of success around the world, but we hope that this ambitious system in a city that loves alternative forms of transportation will catch on quickly. via New York Observer

Comments Off on Minnesota’s Bike Share Expands to 1,200 Bikes!

The Twin Cities on Two Wheels Nice Ride MN , Minesota’s great bike sharing program, is growing up fast. There are already a good number of bike stations ( as you can see on this map ), but they are expanding: They started last year with 65 stations and 700 bikes, and this year they’re planning to end up with around 115 stations and 1,200 bikes. Reception has been good so far, and only one bike has been stolen (not bad compared to other public bike sharing programs). Check out… Read the full story on TreeHugger
