Shadow, a wolf pup living at the San Diego Zoo , gets some play time with his caregivers in this “awww”-inspiring video. He’s exploring all kinds of new scents, tastes, and textures, from tree branches and ice cubes to cardboard boxes and fabric toys (with plenty of cuddles for good measure). This little guy was only two months old at the time this video was taken, and he has since become an ambassador for his species at the Wegeforth Bowl at the zoo. In that role, Shadow interacts with the public and helps to teach visitors about how wonderful wolves are, and how vital they are for a healthy ecosystem . Finally some good news on the pipeline beat. Phys.org reports that Canadian energy infrastructure company TransCanada recently decided to suspend construction of a major pipeline terminal on the St. Lawrence River in Eastern Canada after Canadian authorities deemed a nearby population of beluga whales “endangered.” The belugas live near Cacouna, Quebec, the planned location of the terminal, and were given the status of “threatened” when the last formal study of their population was done 10 years ago. If you liked the Hilden & Diaz fairytale chandelier,  you’re going to love these creations by  John Winstead. His Organic Shadows chandeliers  came about as an artistic dream to create interactive and natural works of art, and are designed to create a communion with nature in any space by casting soft, forest-like shadows on any interior space. The chandeliers come in two styles, Mandrake and Willow, with one being more antler-like and the other a bit softer and mossier. Both are lit with LED lights for maximum energy efficiency, and create a diffuse glow along with the shadows they create. Winstead designed these pieces with the desire to reconnect with nature by using natural, organic materials that would evoke a woodland space, but still maintain a modern and sophisticated aesthetic that’s suitable for an art gallery or performance hall. + Organic Shadows The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. “In the age-old image of the Ouroboros lies the thought of devouring oneself and turning oneself into a circulatory process, for it was clear to the more astute alchemists that the prima materia of the art was man himself.

Last week, Elizabeth reminded you how much fun you can have reacquainting yourself with eye shadow. Eye shadow is the first area of makeup application that captured my interest (well, that and the teal mascara I wore when I was 11 – it was, like, totally rad), because I truly felt like an artist, working with various colors to create wildly different looks with the same face

All photos: Bas Princen, Klavs Bo Christensen and Alexander Heilner Outside Egypt’s capital, in the shadow of the Pyramids and tucked in the mountains of Mokattam, is an incredible city that literally survives on trash. Garbage City, as it’s known, is home to 30,000 Zabaleens– Coptic Christians from southern Egypt –who, each day, enter Cairo and collect its waste
