Photo via Shutterstock Say you’re a small town looking to add some green energy options to your city. You could invest in good old wind or solar power, or in the case of one Spanish town , you could just ask your citizens to flush their toilets. That’s the concept behind Chiclana de la Frontera’s sewage treatment plant, which is the world’s first plant that will be used to convert sewage into renewable biofuel. Heavy Rainfall in Chicago Causes Sewage to Spew into Lake Michigan

Heavy rain overwhelmed Chicago’s aged infrastructure yesterday, causing sewage to back up into homes and burst through manhole covers in the middle of the street. The videos make for pretty horrifying viewing , but equally horrifying is how the pressure on the system was alleviated: through a last resort measure that allows runoff and wastewater to be released into Lake Michigan . And this isn’t a one-off, as Chicago has experienced ever increasing rainfall, over 21 billion gallons of wastewater and runoff was released into Lake Michigan between 2007 and 1012. Today FuelCell Energy, Inc. announced  the dedication and operation of the world’s largest carbon neutral fuel cell power plant – a 2.8 megawatt DFC3000 stationary fuel cell power plant installation at a water treatment facility in California. The plant’s unique on-site fuel cell application converts biogas , a harmful greenhouse gas, into electricity and usable high-quality heat in a carbon-neutral fashion that emits virtually no pollutants. Poo-power , or the science of turning excrement into energy, has been gaining popularity over recent years, and now scientists at Penn State University have developed a device which they claim could allow sewage plants to efficiently turn their own wastewater into eco-friendly wattage. The device combines microbial fuel cell technology with reverse electrodialysis systems to produce 0.9 kilowatt-hours of electricity per kilogram of organic waste. We are so excited to learn that the amazing Toilet Bike Neo has completed its poop-powered 870 mile journey across Japan! Earlier this year, top toilet maker Toto unveiled their talking three-wheeled motorcycle, which includes a much laughed-about but only decorative toilet seat, as part of their plan to half their company’s carbon emissions by 2017. The motorbike is fueled by a combination of household sewage and livestock waste converted into an ecologically-friendly biogas that is stored in tanks at the back of the bike! Image via screengrab. The disaster at Fukushima may have faded from the news cycle, but the radioactive waste it left behind isn’t going anywhere. At the Saitama sewage treatment plant, 169 miles from Fukushima, workers are dealing with tons of radioactive sewage, Al Jazeera reported. Without any training with radioactive materials and unable to sell the sewage, they have put it under waterproof tarps, in a line of bundles that… Read the full story on TreeHugger
