E-waste is a pressing modern issue: according to the EPA, over 60 million metric tons of e-waste , or electronic waste, enters landfills every single year. iPhones and Apple Watches are among the offending devices casually tossed out each year – the company has sold over a billion of the phones but few are recycled properly. Today at their event in San Francisco, Apple their new iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2. Both are water resistant. Related: Apple just unveiled a blazing fast iPhone recycling robot Apple’s Twitter account actually leaked the detail that the iPhone 7 is water resistant. According to Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller, the new enclosure on the iPhone 7 means it is water and dust resistant. Apple COO Jeff Williams spoke about the Apple Watch Series 2: a “completely re-engineered” watch. According to Williams, while the first Apple Watch was splash-proof, the Apple Watch Series 2 is actually “swim-proof.” He said users can wear it while swimming , surfing, or even during the “occasional cannonball.” Apple created new seals and adhesives to close entry points where water could leak into the device, but one area that was hard to seal was the speaker. According to Williams, they redesigned the speaker system so they can actually “use the speaker itself” to “eject water.” The watch won’t just be swim-proof for a lap every once and a while, but for those who swim daily. Apple tested the Watch in a simulator to see that it would last for those who swim over the course of several years, for “hundreds of thousands of strokes.” + Apple

Solar- and Geothermal-Powered Guthrie Green Park Replaces an Old Truck Loading Facility in Tulsa

Comments Off on Solar- and Geothermal-Powered Guthrie Green Park Replaces an Old Truck Loading Facility in Tulsa

The site of the new Guthrie Green Park was once a 2.7-acre truck loading facility – essentially a concrete jungle. Now it’s a green oasis and community gathering space offering gardens, interactive fountains, outdoor stage with vine-covered ‘green rooms’, a multi-purpose lawn for performances and festivals, and an 11,200-square-foot cafe pavilion. Designed by the Sausalito, CA office of SWA Group , the park sits across the street from the new Woody Guthrie Archives, which used to be the former Tulsa Paper Company Building. Both projects were funded by the George Kaiser Family Foundation as part of an urban revitalization program in the Brady Arts District. “SWA designed and helped our community develop a magnificent gathering space in the center of a once-forgotten part of downtown Tulsa which is now thriving with arts, music, great food and celebration on almost every day of the week,” said Ken Levit, Executive Director of the George Kaiser Family Foundation . “The park—known as Guthrie Green—almost instantly became “the place to be” on any given sunny day in our city.” The park is more than just a fun place to play and cool off when its hot. Guthrie Green is also a giant geothermal sink with a ground-source heat pump system buried under the park. After removing the concrete pad, 120 wells were drilled to 500 ft depth as part of the ‘geo-exchange’ system, which generates 600 tons (7.2 million BTU/hour) of heating/cooling distributed via underground pipes to serve 120,000 square feet of nearby non-profit users as well as the cafe pavilion and bathrooms. Photovoltaic panels on the pavilion roof supply power for the heat pump system. The system reduces energy use by 60% with investment payback in five to seven years. Elizabeth Shreeve, principal of SWA Group, the project designer told us, “Tulsa’s new Guthrie Green demonstrates the power of city parks to catalyze revitalization, generate innovative sources of energy, and maximize the benefits of effective private-public partnerships.” + SWA Group + George Kaiser Family Foundation Images ©Jonnu Singleton / SWA

Comments Off on BMW’s 2013 ActiveHybrid 3 is the Perfect Balance Between Fuel Efficiency and Power

Since the first hybrid models arrived on the market over a decade ago, we’ve become accustomed to most hybrids placing a large emphasis on fuel efficiency at the cost of sheer power and fun. The new 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is not one of those “typical” hybrids. The ActiveHybrid 3 is powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that is mated to an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new vehicle is a hybrid version of the popular BMW 3 Series , and it’s the third model in BMW’s lineup that will be available with a hybrid electric powertrain. BMW has announced that the 2013 ActiveHybrid 3 will arrive in U.S. showrooms this fall with a starting price of $50,195.
