A lovely little space has popped up in a north London garden as a shared workspace for a musician and seamstress couple. Cork Study—named after its sustainable cork cladding—is the work of design studio Surman Weston , also known for another charming backyard studio they built in 2014 . Large glass panes and a minimalist approach make the workspace feel surprisingly spacious despite its small 13-square-meter footprint. Surrounded by brick walls and greenery, Cork Study is slotted into a narrow garden with a small amount of clearance on either side. The architects wrapped the boxy volume in beautiful pale cork cladding that provides weatherproofing as well as thermal and acoustic insulation. The thick cork and the wildflower sedum roof help blend the building into the landscape. A large skylight and glazed oak-framed sliding pocket door bathe the interior in natural light. Birch plywood lines the interior and is also used for the custom furnishing that’s cantilevered off the walls. A central vertically oriented window divides the shared desk unit into two. Timber internal linings, an all timber structural frame and the wild-flower sedum roof are used in conjunction with the fantastically sustainable cork cladding. Formed from the re-harvestable bark of cork-oak trees, the innovative expanded cork blocks are completely additive free and significantly carbon negative .” The Cork Study was shortlisted for a RIBA London Award 2017. + Surman Weston Photography: Wai Ming Ng

Bamboo grove creates an oasis of calm atop a busy Chinese mall

A bamboo “forest” wraps around this unique oasis-like space hidden atop a Chinese shopping mall. Beijing-based V STUDIO designed the Bamboo Rooftop Room, a minimalist, all-white space for a client who wanted an intimate space for business and leisure purposes. Designed as a quiet refuge, the rooftop project stands in purposeful contrast to the bustling urban landscape. Located on the eastern end of the roof , the 220-square-meter Bamboo Rooftop Room consists of a glazed rectangular volume enclosed by a high wall for privacy. Set against a white backdrop, bamboo planted around the main volume gives inhabitants the illusion of being in a bamboo forest. Gaps between the wall and main volume are used as private courtyards and allow indirect natural light to reach the interior. Related: Giant bamboo planters protect a Ho Chi Minh City home from the sun and rain To emphasize the project’s oasis-like character, the all-white interior is kept minimalist. Furnishings are made from timber and upholstered in fabrics of muted colors, while views of the bamboo grove can be enjoyed through full-height glazing from every room. The interior is split into meeting spaces of varying sizes with a kitchen and dining room at the core. A bedroom is located on the east side. + V STUDIO

Outspoken Environmentalist, Feminist and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Wangari Maathai Passes Away at Age 71

Yesterday, the world said goodbye to one of its most fearless environmental voices – Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai. Decades ahead of her time, the brilliant Kenyan author and environmental activist founded the Green Belt Movement that has since planted millions of trees . She stood up for the environment long before it was fashionable to do so, and steadfastly challenged her own corrupt government when there was no one to protect her from dangerous consequences. In 2004, Wangari Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote “a holistic approach to sustainable development” that focused on the interrelatedness of social injustice and environmental degradation. She was the first African woman to receive that prize, a source of enormous pride for women everywhere.
