Skincare company Foreo has an illuminating idea for solving global warming: just increase the moon’s reflectivity to make the night sky brighter. Think of all the energy savings if we didn’t have to power streetlights, houselights and all those 24-hour businesses. The presumably tongue-in-cheek idea (the company perhaps not coincidentally sells a face-cleaning brush called LUNA) proposes coating part of the moon in a reflective surface in order to increase the amount of light it reflects back to the Earth during the evening. We have all heard the phrases “phantom power” and “vampire energy” about a million times and yet the problem still exists – we simply can’t figure out how to remember to unplug our battery chargers and other electronics when we are done with them. The State of California has decided that instead of trying to change the stubborn behavior of humans, they’re going to change the behavior of the chargers . In 2013 the state will introduce new battery charger standards that will reduce overall consumption by up to 40%, save enough energy to power 350,000 homes, save Californians $300 million in energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by one million metric tons. Yesterday, President Obama and former president Bill Clinton announced a combined $4 billion commitment in public and private funding for energy upgrades to existing buildings. The cash is pledged as part of the President’s Better Buildings Challenge , which was announced earlier this year and motivates buildings to become 20% more efficient by 2020. The President, by way of a Presidential Memorandum, committed to $2 billion in upgrades to federal buildings over the next two years that will save much more in the long run in reduced energy costs. That commitment was met by $2 billion in private sector funding to make 1.6 billion square feet of office, industrial, municipal, hospital, university, community college and school buildings more energy efficient.
