Comments Off on CORRECTION: Flyer About NYPD Releasing Perfluorocarbon Gas into Subway is Fake But the Gas Part is Real

On Tuesday, Inhabitat published an article reporting that the MTA distributed a flyer thanking NYC train riders for participating in an NYPD study where perfluorocarbon gas would be pumped into the subway system . Yesterday, we learned that the flyer itself was not an official MTA communication, and was actually handed out by an unknown party. While the flyer was unauthorized, the gas tests, called the Subway-Surface Air Flow Exchange program , are real and trace amounts of perfluorocarbon gas will, in fact, be introduced into the subway system on certain dates in July. It might be hard to imagine a scenario where the blind could drive safely , where distractions on the road would not be an issue, and even where fuel consumption could be lowered by a computer-operated car which could stop and go more efficiently than a human driver – but Google’s autonomous driving technology could make all of that possible. Google has seven cars (six Priuses and one Audi TT) equipped with radars, lasers and access to a sophisticated database of road information, which have now amassed a combined 200,000 miles of on the road! To celebrate this milestone Google has released a video which introduces us to Steve Mahan, a man with 95% vision loss, as he runs errands in one of their “driverless” cars. The Chevy Volt has been getting a lot of attention since GM decided to pause production for five weeks , due to growing inventory. And although sales of the Volt this year are not off to a great start in the U.S, the Volt’s better-looking twin, the Opel Ampera , is apparently doing quite well in Europe according to Opel executives. Opel just started delivering Amperas to customers last month, and has already received over 7,000 orders, which means that the Ampera should hit its sales target of 10,000 units. Opel apparently bumped up its 2012 sales target to 10,000 from 8,000 due to the increased demand. Worries over the possibility of an explosion at Total’s Elgin platform in the North Sea have led the French oil and gas giant to send fire-fighting ships to the gas extraction well. Experts who worked on the Deep Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico have now been asked to come to the area as an exclusion zone was established around the platform located 150 miles off the coast of Scotland.
