The cobalt in your smartphone’s battery could have been sourced with child labor, according to a new report from Amnesty International . The human rights organization traced the sale of cobalt, a main component in lithium-ion batteries, back to mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo and found that children as young as seven are working there to unearth the valuable mineral. Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Sony and automakers Volkswagen and Daimler are among the tech giants named in the report , which claims those companies have not been thorough enough when it comes to understanding who is mining cobalt for their products. Samsung recently published an R&D report , which proposes the creation of a global network of thousands of microsatellites that can transmit information at speeds up to one terabyte per second. Though perhaps most famous for its consumer electronics, Samsung is involved in other areas of innovation, from medical technology to automated drones weaponry. With its newly published report, the South Korea-based conglomerate takes one step into the stratosphere and towards greater global internet access. In order to cut down on e-waste , the European Parliament voted last week to require all cell phone manufacturers to use a universal charger. The Radio Equipment Directive is expected to cut clutter by 51,000 tons annually and reduce the amount of interference between radio devices. Tesla and Panasonic just announced a new agreement that will allow Panasonic to expand its supply of automotive-grade lithium-ion battery cells to the EV manufacturer. The new agreement expands on the companies’ original 2011 arrangement, and it will give Tesla access to almost two billion lithium-ion battery cells for use in the Model S sedan and the upcoming Model X crossover that is slated to go into production at the end of 2014.
