Danish designer Johanna Riedl created a chair that redefines waste minimization-the seat and backrest of her Saw Dust Chair are made from sawdust generated while making the chair frame. The dust is collected and put into bags that can be vacuumed to create a stiff and comfortable seating element. Riedl’s brilliant chair forms part of the Morphology program established by the Royal Danish Academy Schools of Architecture and Design , and was one of several student projects featured at this year’s Milan Design Week . 5.9 isn’t just any number; it’s the magnitude of the devastating earthquake that struck the Italian region of Emilia May 29, 2012. Italian company Budri  was one of the companies affected by the quake, and they reacted to the damage by creating a series of tables and other decor from their damaged archive of marbles and stones (including onyx, lapis lazuli, amethyst and mother of pearl). The series, aptly dubbed Earthquake 5.9, was recently presented at the 2013 Salone del Mobile . Designers Bruno Dussert-Vidalet and Alessandro Dolcetta turn light into emotion with their new lighting company,  Blackbody . Presenting for the first time at Euroluce during Milan Design Week earlier this month, Blackbody incorporates works from designers across the globe, including a piece called “Bonzai” designed by Italian architect and designer Aldo Cibic, and “Bell family” designed by French designer Thierry Gaugain. The lamps are designed to be long-lasting (14,000 hours life), ultra flat (2 mm thickness), glare-free, heat-free, and 100% recyclable through the use of luminous OLEDs . More than simple lamps, Blackbody’s multi-faceted forms allow architects and designers to explore innovative and personalized approaches to application. + Blackbody OLED Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: Alessandro Dolcetta , ambient lighting , Blackbody , Blackbody OLED , Bruno Dussert-Vidalet , eco lighting , energy efficient lighting , Euroluce , green lighting , Milan Design , Milan Furniture Fair , OLED , Salone del mobile

20 years ago there were an estimated 50,000 rivers running through China – but a recent survey has found that over 27,000 of the waterways have disappeared.  An extensive three-year waterway census throughout the country found that China’s rivers only number 22,909 – remarkably less than previously thought. But despite the dicey recent history surrounding China’s rivers , environmental issues aren’t entirely to blame – old-fashioned human error may have thrown the estimated numbers severely off. Young designer Wilhelm Teller took inspiration from his grandmother’s curio cabinet to create a line of creatively beautiful dishware . Scouring second-hand stores, the designer collected dozens of ornate pieces of china, long lost from their original sets. Teller gave these orphan plates new life by recycling them into wonderfully mismatched tiered cake plates , aptly named “Grandmother.” Read the rest of Willhelm Teller Upcycles Old Dishes Into Tiered Cake Plates Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: eco design , Grandmother plates , green design , Milan Design Week , recycled chinaware , Salone del mobile , sustainable design , Wilhelm Teller
