A giant hippo was recently spotted floating on London’s River Thames! No, it’s not a freakish migration caused by global warming; rather it’s a work of art by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman , who is famous for his scaled-up sculptures (like this gigantic Rubber Duck ). The 21-meter-long HippopoThames was inspired by prehistoric mammals that once inhabited the river. The sculpture will remain on display at Nine Elms on the South Bank until September 28, 2014. Florentijn Hofman ‘s giant, inflatable yellow duck has graced ports and harbors across the globe – however its fame has made it the latest target for Chinese counterfeiters. Ever since the 54-foot friendly fowl arrived in Hong Kong , cities across the mainland have sprouted their own unofficial versions. Dubious imposter ducks have shown up in Dongguan, wearing a blue hair bow and long eyelashes; Xi’an, where it was housed behind metal gates; and a duck has been promised to appear in Wuhan next. The giant rubber duck that has captivated residents of Hong Kong deflated into an oversize floating blob overnight, CNN reports . At first Harbor City officials didn’t respond to queries about what had caused the demise of Florentjin Hofman’s quirky art bird, but a tweet later in the day alluded to its need for a little tune up. The latest stop on a world tour, Hong Kong was expecting the 54 foot rubber duck to bob on the water of Victoria harbor until June 9th, 2013. The world’s largest inflatable rubber duck sailed into the Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong yesterday. The 46-foot-tall and 55-foot-long floating sculpture, which is the work of Dutch conceptual artist Florentijin Hofman , was pulled into the harbor by a tiny tug boat, causing quite a stir among the curious locals. The Rubber Duck has already visited Sydney, Osaka and Sao Paolo, and will remain in Hong Kong until June 9.
