Everyone loves an Etch-A-Sketch , but a materials scientist/electrical engineer has gone one further and created a LED version of the popular toy. He has provided full instructions, which can teach anyone to make the hi-tech gizmo for themselves, but be warned – it’s quite technical. This small aquaponics system , designed as a therapeutic indoor display has been developed by N.I. Teijin Shoji, grows fresh lettuce and fish. The aquaponics system consists of a fish tank and a vegetable planter, which are connected by pipes. As in other aquaponics systems, the plants are fertilized by the fish effluent in a symbiotic, closed-loop system. The compact design, where the water, ornamental fish, and vegetables can all be seen together, was created by a.a.c., an aquarium production company. This version will be priced at 300,000 yen ($3,800). N.I. Teijin also plans to offer custom-made versions. + Diginfo The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. MIT designers Ilan Moyer and Nadya Peek have created a briefcase-sized 3D printer called Popfab that is much more than meets the eye. Like a hi-tech Swiss army knife , the printer is also a CNC milling machine, vinyl cutter, and programmable drawing tool. We’re big fans of 3D printing here at Inhabitat for the many ways the technology can transform design and construction – and now this briefcase-sized device will allow creative types to take their work on the road!
