Hot sun / Shutterstock Historically, the UK has seen only a fraction of heat-related deaths compared to the number of cold-related deaths. But this is all about to change due to climate change. A new study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health by Public Health England and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine shows that deaths resulting from hot weather are expected to soar over the next four decades and that the number of annual deaths in the UK related to heat will rise by 257 percent by 2050 and 535 percent by 2080. Photo via Shutterstock New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s ultimately unsuccessful efforts to ban the sale of super-sized sugary beverages within the city may have been met with skepticism by some, but a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health underscores just how devastatingly unhealthy these drinks can be. By looking at the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages in 114 countries and correlating that data with rates of obesity-related deaths—that is, deaths resulting from heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers—the study found that sodas and their kin could be responsible for over 180,000 premature deaths each year— 25,000 of those in the US alone . The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) reports that by the end of the century, heat-related deaths in the United States are expected to triple as a result of climate change. As summer approaches, Americans dust off the BBQ, slip on their swimming gear and head to the beach. But sun-worshipers often pay a tragic price. Equally, those who opt to stay indoors sometimes struggle to cool inefficient homes. Each year, there are approximately 1,332 heat-related deaths and with temperatures rising due to climate change , the NRDC claims that this number could rise to 4,608 by 2100. That’s more than twice as many died in all of 2009. This news should hardly be surprising to anyone who follows international news — the flooding in Pakistan , heat waves in Russia , and sea level rise in island nations like T..
