We’ve all heard of electronic fabrics , but robotic fabrics? That’s a new one. Researchers are Purdue University are developing an electronic skin-like fabric that can move on its own, twisting and turning into endless shapes. So why do we need such a thing? Robotic fabrics could be used to create active clothing for sports, soldiers and astronauts or help those with disabilities move while wearing the fabric, changing the way we interact with our clothing. 3D printers are everywhere these days, creating items from racecars to prosthetic beaks for bald eagles. Sadly, one major drawback of this new technology is that the objects made from metals and plastic polymers can easily fall apart from physical stress or poor design. Now, researchers at Purdue and Adobe’s Advanced Technology Labs have designed a computer program that can automatically identify weak spots in design specifications and add support before they’re printed. Team Purdue’s entry in the 2011 Solar decathlon is decidedly Midwestern in its approach – it’s a traditional-looking home that won’t necessarily stick out in a crowd – however it’s efficient enough to actually feed local utilities rather than relying on them. The INhome is designed with cost in mind, utilizing off-the-shelf materials and equipment to achieve a low energy footprint that is easily fulfilled by the generous solar electric array on the roof. While the sedated design is aiming at making sustainable building available for the mainstream market, the team did incorporate some unique features — most notably an interior green wall – or biowall – to filter the air.
