For those with prosthetic arms , the ability to grab or hold things is empowering, but the inability to feel them – to determine whether something is hot or cold, hard or soft – can be frustrating. Now, a breakthrough from the team at Case Western Reserve University gives amputees with prosthetic limbs the ability to “feel” something that they touch or hold. Comments Off on US govt developing brain implants that give humans the ability to never forget

Supported by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), scientists are hard at work on a brain implant that will grant humans the ability to never forget. The Restoring Active Memory (RAM) project is focused on restoring memory abilities to veterans of the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If successful, RAM could have an enormous positive impact on the lives of over 300,000 veterans who have returned home with brain injuries. Onions are already known as tearjerkers, but the humble allium ’s contribution to a recent robotics breakthrough may be reason for tears of joy. In the journal Applied Physics Letters , researchers at National Taiwan University announced that the creation of a new method for creating artificial muscle by applying layers of gold on the outer skin of an onion. “Like human muscles, [onion skin] can bend and contract simultaneously,” says Wen-Pin Shih, a mechanical engineer on the project. “That’s something previous models couldn’t do.” When refined, the gold-onion artificial muscle could have profound implications for the future of prosthetics. Comments Off on Norway is saying “no more” to fur farm subsidies

Fur farmers in Norway may soon feel the pinch as the government recently announced a proposal to cut subsidies to these controversial farms . A cut of 17.8 million kroner ($2.35 million US) worth of agricultural subsidies that go directly to fur farmers is being proposed – approximately half of the total aid to that industry in Norway. But some in the country are pushing back, saying that the cuts could threaten the local economy. Comments Off on Hawaii aims to be the first state to run entirely on renewable energy

Hawaii has more reasons than most to have a disdain for oil dependence—as a series of islands, climate change poses a very present threat—and, as a series of islands that’s dependent on oil, they have to import a lot of it. And that gets very expensive—with over 90 percent of Hawaii’s energy generated from imported oil, their electricity rates are about 175 percent of the national average. To remedy this, the state is looking to clean energy, and a bill passed last week by the legislature would see all of Hawaii’s power generated from renewable sources by 2045. Image by Action Press / REX When humans encounter mobility problems, we have a host of options that range from walkers to prosthetics , but for our four-legged friends things aren’t quite so easy. Such was the case for Blade , a German tortoise with a growth disorder that left his legs so weak that he couldn’t hold himself up. The Daily Mail Reports that thanks to the ingenuity of his vet, Blade can now get around on his very own, custom-built, LEGO wheelchair .
