The energy market has changed dramatically since Microsoft signed its first power purchase agreement (PPA) in 2012, according to Brian Janous, the tech company’s director of energy strategy. Back then, the idea of signing a 20-year PPA was novel, but now there is a massive uptick in companies participating in energy agreements. However, the risks of market fluctuation and falling prices are all material to designing electricity markets in the future. “More companies are signing a shorter PPA,” said Janous. “These things are not a free lunch.”

Photo via Shutterstock Google has long been at the forefront of technological advancement , and now the Silicon Valley giant has come up with a plan that could potentially take the renewable energy market to the next level. In a post published on the company’s blog, Google Director of Global Infrastructure Gary Demasi announced  a plan that would create a special tariff for clean energy . Working with Duke Energy, the company is establishing a rate for its data center in Lenoir, NC. By establishing this new designation, Google hopes to make it easier for large businesses to take advantage of clean energy. Artist  Michael Jantzen  has released designs for a solar-powered seed-sowing machine that would plant flowers in response to evidence of environmental destruction. Placed in various locations around the world, these structures would detect signs of pollution and automatically release small quantities of flower seeds onto the ground below. The result is a paradox: the more flowers blooming around one of the apparatuses, the worse the environmental degradation in the surrounding area.
