The UK’s Centre for Alternative Technology just released a new report showing that a Zero Carbon Britain is possible by the year 2030. The report states that the decarbonization of the UK could be achieved by increasing the country’s wind power output and other renewable energy sources – however the UK is already in danger of not meeting its 2020 energy goals due to the consequences of the global recession. Wind turbines have a lot of opponents, and lots of regulatory hurdles that they must go through between initial proposal and final approval. One particular difficulty has been from aviation authorities (both civilian and military) whose radar can pick up interference from wind turbines

As sunny as the southeastern U.S. is, solar power development hasn’t taken off as quickly as you’d think.  That will change dramatically when a new 400 MW solar farm is built in one of three states:  Florida, Georgia or North Carolina.  The huge project could potentially be the world’s largest when it’s completed.  The current largest is an 80 MW solar plant in Ontario, Canada, but many large projects are in the planning or construction stages.

Eco Factor: Photosensitive dyes could be sprayed onto steel for energy generation. Tata Steel-led Corus and Swansea University (Wales, UK) have collaborated to bring about solar conversion of steel sheets with a pioneering spray-on technology. As the developers plan to coat steel sheets with photosensitive dyes, they would act as power generating solar cells.

Comments Off on BP Could Go Bankrupt Over Gulf Spill

Photo via Autoblog Green So far in its coverage of the BP Gulf spill , the media has made much of the fact that the company’s daily profits are higher than its daily cleanup costs, and that after raking in $17 billion in profits last year alone, such costs are but a drop in the bucket. But that’s changing fast — and if a few other factors come to pass, it’s possible that the Gulf spill will end up bankrupting the oil giant

A vague, but potentially exciting announcement from Chrysler this week says that the automaker and NASA are pairing up to “share knowledge” and resources on advanced technologies. The topics that this new alliance will discuss and investigate include materials engineering, robotics, radar, battery systems and other energy storage mediums.  Chrysler has obviously gained a very valuable resource for creating cutting edge (most likely electric) cars, but what’s in this partnership for NASA? The car company says that they have a history working with NASA in their space program, specifically, building rockets and boosters for some of the manned Mercury and Apollo missions in 1961 and 1968.  Could Chrysler be offering the same type of help again?
