Several automakers have teased the idea of a wireless charging pad that would make it easier to charge electric cars without a pesky cable, but BMW is ahead of the game. The automaker has announced it is ready to offer a wireless charging pad for the 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid that recharges the battery just like a Sonicare toothbrush. With the new charging pad, 530e owners simply park over the pad , which is connected to a 220-volt outlet, and it will recharge – without having to connect any wires. Special sensors on the car help guide drivers over the charging pad; once parked, the 530e can be completely recharged in around 3.5 hours. Related: BMW unveils dynamic new rival to the Tesla Model S The technology is ready for public consumption, but it’s not known when it will be available in the U.S. since it hasn’t been approved. Outside the U.S., buyers will be able to purchase the wireless charging technology early next year, but it will only be available for the 530e iPerformance vehicle. A wireless charging system for models like the i3 and i8 will reportedly be made available at a later date. We also don’t know how much the wireless charging system will cost, but by the time it does arrive in the U.S. hopefully it will be compatible with the rest of BMW’s lineup. + BMW Images @BMW

In just two years, every Volvo vehicle rolling off the production line will be electric. Volvo has announced that starting in 2019, every model it sells will have some sort of electrification – either in the form of a mild-hybrid system, a plug-in hybrid or a fully-electric powertrain. The news marks a significant change for a major automaker, and it follows Volvo’s announcement last month that its Polestar brand will become a standalone high-performance EV brand. Volvo will introduce a full lineup of electrified vehicles across its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid cars and 48-volt mild-hybrid cars. Related: Volvo will introduce an electric car by 2019 – and it could have a 325-mile driving range “This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.” Volvo currently offers plug-in hybrid versions of models like the XC90 and S90, but there aren’t any fully-electric models in its lineup. Volvo will introduce three new electric cars between 2019 and 2021, while the Polestar brand will introduce an additional two models during the same time period. “This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” said Mr Samuelsson. “ Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. Grid reliability is a growing concern as the world transitions to renewable energy and existing infrastructure ages. To address these challenges, Toronto Hydro is testing a grid-scale energy storage system that can be attached to poles already present around the city. The system has been in place since August of last year, and it’s already displaying positive results. Toronto Hydro is running a pilot program with the pole-mounted energy storage system in the city’s North York neighborhood. Drawing on eCAMION battery technology, the energy storage system was first developed at Ryerson University . According to the press release, the system completely lacks a footprint, because it can be attached to existing infrastructure. Related: New on-demand energy system generates and stores power in one device The energy storage system can be mounted 16 feet up on power poles, and can store as much energy as around 2,100 smartphone batteries could. During off-peak hours, it stores power and then releases it when there’s a demand. Energy storage technology could lengthen the lifespan of some of Toronto Hydro’s equipment, and offer reliability as a backup power source in case of an outage. Bala Venkatesh, Academic Director at Ryerson University’s Center for Urban Energy, described this energy storage unit as the first of its kind in the world, saying in a statement, “This project showcases how the use of energy storage and smart grid technologies can enhance distribution system performance and reduce asset upgrade costs.” The team monitoring the pole-mounted system is scrutinizing how it reacts to real-time data. So far they’ve found the system can indeed lower the burden on local transformers. Should the pilot project continue to go well, Toronto Hydro is considering implementing the technology on new installations on the more than 175,000 power poles in Toronto. You probably have that one friend who visits IKEA just for their Swedish meatballs, but now the furniture giant is showing how creative you can get with those meatballs at home. They just rolled out the IKEA Easy Recipe Series cookbook in Canadian stores, which makes dinner easier to cook with parchment paper pages that resemble a paint-by-numbers sketch – and they do much of the hard work for you. IKEA has made well-designed furniture more accessible, and now it seems they’re working to make food more accessible too. They got a little help from the Leo Burnett Toronto advertising agency to come up with the Cook This Page campaign. All users have to do is fill in the pictures of food on the parchment cooking pages, put it in the oven, and pull out a dinner that assembles far easier than an IKEA bed frame or bookcase. Related: IKEA’s new app will let you preview furniture in your home before you buy IKEA’s cookbook pages don’t simply come with a list of ingredients. The pages have spaces on which to place the food, drawn with food-safe ink in the approximate sizes of the precise amounts of items like one minced garlic clove or one eighth of a teaspoon of black pepper. Users place ingredients on the pages and roll them up to cook. The pages recently popped up in Canadian stores during the IKEA Kitchen Event. People could see exactly what food and kitchen equipment they’d need, and shop for the items at the store before taking the pages home to bake homemade meals. According to a video on the campaign, IKEA realized some folks are intimidated by new food and recipes , and “wanted to show people that getting creative can be deliciously simple.” Leo Burnett won two Gold and two Bronze Cannes Lions at this year’s festival for their work on the campaign. It’s been six years since the last electrified MINI, the MINI E was made available. Although BMW has confirmed plans to introduce a new fully-electric MINI in the next few years, if you’ve been hoping that MINI would introduce a plug-in model sooner, your prayers have been answered. MINI has unveiled the all-new 2017 Countryman crossover, which marks the introduction of the automaker’s first plug-in hybrid . The new Countryman is now the biggest MINI to date, but at the same time it is also the greenest model in MINI’s current lineup. Standard versions can be equipped with efficient three- and four-cylinder engines, but even more noteworthy is the new plug-in hybrid version. The Countryman plug-in hybrid is powered by a 1.5L three-cylinder mated to an electric motor for a total combined output of 221 horsepower, which is more than either of the standard gasoline powered versions. The 7.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery gives the Countryman plug-in hybrid an electric driving range of 24 miles at speeds up to 77 mph. While the electric charging infrastructure continues to improve, many car buyers still have range anxiety when thinking about purchasing an electric car . That’s why plug-in hybrids are still currently the best option for electric car buyers that aren’t comfortable with a 100-mile range full electric vehicle. Buyers have many options when it comes to plug-in hybrids, but Ford has announced the specifications of its updated 2017 Fusion Energi sedan, and it can travel further than any other plug-in hybrid on the market. Refreshed for the 2017 model year, the Ford Fusion sedan gets plenty of upgrades to the exterior, more tech features and even some updates under the skin to make it more efficient. Updates to the Fusion Energi’s hybrid powertrain software and regenerative braking ensures the 2017 Fusion Energi can now travel up to 610 miles – up from 550 miles for the 2016 model. It would be great if most of that range was in fully electric mode, but the Fusion Energi can only travel up to 21 miles before the gas engine kicks in to keep you moving down the road. Volkswagen is reportedly preparing to make a major investment in electric car technology and hopefully buy some positive press as well. Less than a year after its enormous emissions scandal and the massive recall that followed, the German car company may spend up to $15.5 billion to build a manufacturing plant for electric car batteries . The move would support the company’s lofty goal to sell one million electric and hybrid vehicles annually by 2025. The massive battery factory isn’t a done deal, though. Financial Review, quoting a report in Germany’s Handelsblatt newspaper, reported that VW’s CEO Matthias Müller, who stepped into the role after former chief executive resigned amid last year’s scandal, will unveil plans at the company’s supervisory board meeting next month. A VW spokesperson wouldn’t confirm the report, calling it “speculation.” Related: Evidence suggests VW deliberately deceived US regulators in emissions scandal Industry experts agree that a giant battery manufacturing plant for the car company would make sense, considering VW’s aim to become a global leader in mass market electric cars. Building a battery factory seems like a natural progression in the company’s portfolio, building on previous investments the company has made to support electric vehicles, including $10 million in charging infrastructure  in the United States. VW has a long way to go to reach its goals, though, given that they sold just 67,000 electric vehicles last year around the world, most of which were hybrid models. It’s been almost four years since production of the Fisker Karma stalled after the automaker filed bankruptcy. Now, freshly re-branded with the new name Karma Automotive and a new owner, production of the Karma will reportedly restart sometime this year at a new plant in Southern California. Karma Automotive’s new Chinese owner Wanxiang  has reportedly signed an 11-year lease for a new building in Moreno Valley, CA that is estimated to be worth $30 million.
