Should Starbucks be present in a national park like Yosemite ? More than 20,500 signers of a Change.org petition don’t think so. The petition says opening the Starbucks would pave the way for more undue development and the national park “will lose its essence, making it hardly distinguishable from a chaotic and bustling commercial city.” The idea of a Starbucks in Yosemite National Park has people livid. “National parks are some of the only free, clean, beautiful and pollution free places we have left. Multi billion dollar corporations don’t belong!” said petition signer Rebekah Stevens of Mariposa, California on Change.org. Signer Felicia Flick of Foresthill, California said, “John Muir would roll in his grave.” People saying they’re from places all over the United States and the world have signed the petition to be sent to representative Tom McClintock, senators Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein, and the Yosemite National Park Administration. Related: White House kills ban on bottled water at National Parks The Starbucks would be part of Base Camp Eatery , Yosemite Hospitality’s renovated food court. Yosemite Hospitality is a corporate subsidiary of Aramark , and senior director of corporate communications David Freireich told Thrillist , “The petition is not an accurate representation or reflection of what is being planned. The Starbucks offering will occupy existing space. No new structures or free-standing stores are being built as part of the food court renovation.” National parks right now aren’t free of corporations, according to National Park Service spokesman Jeffrey Olson, who told Mashable , “Many of our current concessioners are multi-national corporations. Concessioners fill a vital role in helping the National Park Service carry out its mission. Private companies are drawn to working with NPS in order to offer services to park visitors, which are not provided directly by the government. Concessioners specialize in these operations and are thus able to provide quality services at reasonable prices.” Aramark became a concessioner at Yosemite in 2016 under a 15-year contract . People continue to sign the petition – at time of publication the number was just over 20,500. Find out more here . Need detachable headlights or augmented reality in your car ? Chinese automaker GAC Motor has you covered. They unveiled a concept car at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit that boasts these features – and a range of 370 miles on one charge. The Verge and Engadget covered the compact new-energy SUV, the Enverge, that GAC debuted as part of their effort to start selling cars in America next year. Gull-wing doors and a flatscreen dashboard are among the flashy features included in the Enverge. The concept car offers virtual reality screens in side windows and removable fog lamps – dubbed G-Torches – that also serve as flashlights for exploring. The 71 kilowatt-hour battery can be charged wirelessly – and 10 minutes could reportedly provide drivers with a range of 240 miles. That remains to be seen – in a press release GAC Motor seemed to indicate they presented the car to show off “the company’s cutting-edge technologies and tremendous potential in the fields of vehicle electrification, networking, and intelligent system.” The company also unveiled the GA4 sedan , designed as a family car. GAC Motor sold around 500,000 cars in China last year. Inhabitat covered GAC Motor last year when they started construction on a $6.5 billion electric vehicle park to manufacture EVs and self-driving cars. GAC Motor is reportedly talking with Fiat Chrysler about distributing cars in America. The company said they showed their cars at the auto show to demonstrate “the brand’s sincerity and determination to enter the North American market” – a move which could happen in 2019. 14-year-old girl convinces major British grocery to stop selling caged hen eggs

Comments Off on 14-year-old girl convinces major British grocery to stop selling caged hen eggs

14-year-old Lucy Gavaghan of England is on a mission to stop the sale of eggs from caged hens. She convinced major British company Tesco to agree to end the sales of “caged eggs” by 2025, and isn’t finished yet. She’s now targeting British companies Asda and Morrisons, and if you want to help you can sign her newest petition here . Gavaghan worked for a few years to stop the sales of caged eggs by writing letters to politicians and supermarkets, but felt that no one was listening. She knew there would be others in the world who, like her, also wanted to stop the sales of eggs from caged hens, so in February 2016, she started a Change.org petition . In total, 280,278 people signed the petition. Related: Kid sisters raise $800,000 with origami to dig water wells around the world Gavaghan met with Tesco’s head of agriculture in May. She said after the meeting, she didn’t really think they would change their policies, but this month finally received a call. Tesco said they’d ” stop selling caged eggs by 2025 .” While the European Union banned putting hens inside battery cages in 2012, the industry began to use “enriched cages” instead. But Gavaghan says the hens still don’t have enough space in those cages – only around the dimensions of an A4 paper (that’s around 8 by 12 inches). Gavaghan said in her first petition, “I have five hens myself, two of them are ex-commercial barn hens and one of them once lived in commercial colony cages. They are amazing animals to be around. Keeping my own hens and knowing their past has made me determined to end caged and barn farming…These methods of egg farming are cruel, unnatural, and inhumane.” After her success with Tesco, Gavaghan plans to ensure they keep their word and is now targeting other grocery stores that still sell caged eggs, Asda and Morrisons . About a week ago she started another Change.org petition, and has already racked up 176,697 supporters. You can add your name to the petition here . + End the sale of eggs from caged hens in Morrison’s and Asda Via The Telegraph Images via Lucy Gavaghan ( 1 , 2 )

Comments Off on PETITION: Tell Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker that climate censorship is not OK

Strange things are afoot in the state of Wisconsin, where a state agency has banned its employees from “working on or speaking about climate change.” Florida’s state Department of Environmental Protection tried it last month and now Wisconsin has hopped aboard the “ignore it and it will go away” train. In what the media has taken to calling an act of “climate censorship,” Wisconsin has become the latest state where the environmental protection rules and regulations are being constructed by people who refuse to accept that climate change is an integral part of our planet’s (and our people’s ) health. Comments Off on Help Stop The Killing of Wolves: Boycott Discovery Channel’s Ridiculous “Man-Eating Super Wolves”

Back in May, the Animal Planet channel was set to screen a ridiculous piece of clap trap posing as a documentary entitled, “Man-Eating Super Wolves.” The production purports that wolf numbers have grown so large that the animals will soon be hunting people living in subdivisions: the kind of scaremongering hyperbole that gets at-risk populations of wolves killed for no valid reason. A public campaign against the screening was successful in getting the program pulled from Animal Planet, but now the Discovery Channel Canada has decided to screen it this coming Sunday 24 August, 2014. If you would like to add your voice to the campaign to stop this screening, read on for details. While a government-sanctioned local food movement might be a distant dream for American locavores, it’s currently becoming a reality in Russia where President Vladimir Putin recently banned a long list of imported foods from the country’s stores. The move is a reaction by the Russian autocrat against countries including the United States, Canada and the whole European Union amongst others, which placed sanctions on Russia in response to the conflict in the Ukraine and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.
