The entire Arctic ice shelf will be gone in four years, as predicted professor Peter Wadhams, head of the Polar Ocean Physics Group at Cambridge University. The new blunt assessment, which comes from one of the leading scientists in the field , flies in the face of a conventional prediction made less than 5 years ago that gave the Arctic another 50 years before all its ice would disappear. But this year’s dramatic reduction in sea ice has many rethinking the timeline. Moreover, this does bleak prediction not only mean the end of the polar bear, but rather the beginning of a very serious feedback loop that will demonstratively hasten the heating of the planet. Approximately eight million people travel between Melbourne and Sydney each year, and that number is set to double within the next 25 years. There is doubt that the country’s current infrastructure can meet this demand, so international design firm Hassell Studios set about to prove there was a better solution than 16-lane highways and endless traffic. The firm recently unveiled the  Australian High Speed Vehicle (A-HSV), a double-decker train concept that could revolutionize the way Aussies travel. Satellites recently showed that Arctic ice is melting 50% faster than expected , and that sea ice levels are set to hit a record low . Now ice scientist Professor Peter Wadhams has revealed to BBC Newsnight that if the planet was to lose the Arctic ice then the impact would “effectively doubl[e] mankind’s contribution to global warming”.
