Wind turbines offer a great way to generate clean power, but they doesn’t exactly work in a city. So Professor Farzad Safaei , Director of the University of Wollongong’s ICT Research Institute , decided to do something about it. Safaei has created a wind turbine that can be installed on skyscrapers or large apartment buildings and can generate energy even safer, quieter and more affordably than current turbines . MIT Developing Ionic Wind Thrusters as Efficient Alternative to Jet Engines

Ion thruster photo from NASA A team from MIT is working on developing ionic wind thrusters as an energy-efficient, low-emission alternative to conventional propulsion technologies like jet engines. The new thrusters would use ionic energy , which is created when a current passes between two electrodes. If one electrode is thinner than the other, it creates an air current in the space between them – and if a substantial voltage is applied, the device could produce powerful thrust without the need for fuel or motors. The completion of  Antilia — the world’s largest and most expensive family home — certainly caused a stir when we first reported on the sky-scraping abode back in 2011, with readers ( and we here at Inhabitat ) calling the Ambani family out for its excess. While exterior shots could be readily found on the web over the last couple years, not much surfaced when it came to the interior. Well, it looks like Curbed  has delivered our first look coupled with some crazy details as to what is hidden inside this towering construction. From nine high-speed elevators to an ice-room able to produce snow in blizzard-like proportions, this 27-floor home is packed full of ridiculous amenities and then some. Perkins+Will has partnered with Infinite Family , a U.S.-based non profit organization, to build shipping container computer labs in South Africa to help students connect with mentors . The firm completed their first LaunchPad learning laboratory in the Alexandra township outside of Johannesburg in August. The shipping container computer labs feature a number of sustainable strategies to reduce energy use, and they are equipped with photovoltaic and battery systems to make them off-grid capable. The team has plans to open 100 more LaunchPads in the next five years to help 11,000 people a year in an effort to reduce crime and increase employment.
