Kenyan officials announced Wednesday that the country will be taking a serious stand against rhinoceros poaching by implanting every rhino in the country with a trackable microchip. As poachers still run rampant throughout much of Africa, the Kenya Wildlife Service is turning to technology to protect the species. Authorities hope that the chips will not only enable them to track down poached horns , but also help prosecute poachers by gathering important evidence. When it comes to hydrogen fuel cells , they are worth their weight in platinum. A team of researchers at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copehagen have developed technology that allows the cells to produce as much electricity as current counterparts without having to use as much pricey platinum. Better for the environment than internal combustion engines, fuel cells are efficient, and they do not emit smog or CO2. Perkins+Will has partnered with Infinite Family , a U.S.-based non profit organization, to build shipping container computer labs in South Africa to help students connect with mentors . The firm completed their first LaunchPad learning laboratory in the Alexandra township outside of Johannesburg in August. The shipping container computer labs feature a number of sustainable strategies to reduce energy use, and they are equipped with photovoltaic and battery systems to make them off-grid capable. The team has plans to open 100 more LaunchPads in the next five years to help 11,000 people a year in an effort to reduce crime and increase employment. This month, Paul Testa Architecture obtained planning approval to build an earth-sheltered home in the United Kingdom. The Burrows is a highly sustainable single-family home that will be built into a hillside in South Yorkshire. Because it is built into the earth, the home will be super insulated, both in the winter and the summer, which will significantly reduce heating and cooling costs. The home will be built to Passivhaus standards (also a first for Yorkshire), and Testa is also aiming for AECB Gold standard.
