A group of year one BA (Hons) Spatial Design students at the London College of Communication were given a live project to promote sustainable design within LCC. Joy Williams and Ashleigh Nutton collaborated to design a sustainability library that could be used for special talks, as well as a mobile book unit that could be transported to other locations. The unit that will be used as a lecture space and permanent sustainability library was brightened up with eco-paints such as Ecos Organic and Little Greene , while the floor tiles were donated by Interface ; a sustainable flooring company. Seating has been created by folding used clothing and stacking them into small benches. Made primarily from donated. up cycled materials, the mobile bookstand was built from reclaimed wooden pallets and MDF from a local scrap yard, and the wheels came from an old shopping trolley. Over the 2014-2015 school year, both the space and the mobile unit will be used for a series of guest expert talks on sustainability and books organized by Barbara Salvadori. + B.A. Spacial Design Program The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. If you’re in the market for a new sofa but don’t feel like shelling out too much cash for one, then why not make your own?!  Styleitchic posted the ultimate DIY guide to building very cool, recycled country sofas with used  shipping pallets a while ago, and they’re super-easy to make . All you need to do is jet down to a local warehouse or waste yard where you can pick up some valuable pallets, grab a handful of screws, find yourself a few wheels, and collect a secondhand mattress or a set of pillows, and you’ll easily be on your way to having your very own upcycled sofa . Perhaps it’s just the blogs I read but it seems like more people than ever are thinking of making gifts this Christmas. There are lots of suggestions out there for making biscuits, cakes or jams, or knitting or crocheting something pretty — but if you’re after a truly frugal Christmas, all those ingredients & yarns add up: what about things which you can make by reusing/recycling/upcycling things from around the home?
