There is a lot to soak in at the London Design Festival , yet the sparkling FIRE RING display by Blackbody catches the eye immediately. Luminous OLED lights of varying colors hang delicately from overhead, mimicking the dance between warm and cool hues seen in a flickering flame. Blackbody has impressed us before with its dazzling installations at the Milan Furniture Fair and ICFF in 2013 , as well as at Wanted Design 2014 . They do not disappoint with their latest creation, which is similar in design to the renewed I.RAIN product series. The use of 100 percent recyclable Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) fixtures means a lightweight, glare-free, and heat-free glow that is as environmentally responsible as it is beautiful. Related: Blackbody’s stunning OLED chandeliers welcome visitors to Wanted Design 2014 Each member of the I.RAIN family can be customized in a variety of finishes: white painted brass, brass, glass, copper, chrome and black nickel. The unique design of FIRE RING , however, is like no other, producing the imagery of “a fire projecting numbers of sparks.” We spotted the stunning display at designjunction , in its newly relocated spot in King’s Cross. +Blackbody + London Design Festival Images via Inhabitat,  Maison & Objet

LG unveils a 55-inch ‘wallpaper’ OLED TV that hangs on the wall with magnets

Comments Off on LG unveils a 55-inch ‘wallpaper’ OLED TV that hangs on the wall with magnets

It’s been four years since LG Display unveiled their first curved OLED (organic light-emitting diode) televisions , and by the time this year’s CES rolled around, they were able to unveil seven new models . Now, at a press conference in Korea, the company has unveiled a mind-boggling 55-inch ‘wallpaper’ display that is just 0.97mm thick and weighs 4.1 pounds. This incredibly thin panel is possible as OLEDs do not require a backlight, and the electrical components are not contained within the TV itself. The entire piece can be mounted on the wall against a magnetic mat, which opens the possibility for televisions to become an even less imposing presence in living spaces. But, we can’t get too excited yet; the ‘wallpaper’ TV is, at this point, just a proof of concept—and should it make it onto the market, it is entirely probable that—much like its OLED TV predecessors—it will be prohibitively expensive. + LG Display Via The Verge Image via LG Display Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: energy efficient tv , lg display , OLED , oled television , OLED TV , oled tv concept , organic light emitting diode , super thin tv , thinnest television

In-Tenta recently unveiled ONA – a new OLED light that fits between a portable light and a table/floor lamp. The design draws inspiration from organic shapes found in nature, and its simple form is composed of OLED lights and a molded plywood base. The lightweight lamp can easily be moved and stacked, and its folded form can be used to store magazines or books on a nightstand or bedside table. + In-Tenta The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Researchers Create Cheaper and Greener OLED Lights Using Inkjet Printers

Photo via Shutterstock Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) aren’t quite as energy efficient as normal LEDs, but they’re still far more efficient than traditional light bulbs, and new research could revolutionize the production of OLEDs. Researchers from the University of Louisville in Kentucky are developing  “hybrid” OLEDs that are combined with inorganic quantum dots that increase both the efficiency and the range of colors that can be produced. But the most interesting wrinkle of the new research is how they’ll be produced—with inkjet printers. Comments Off on German Scientists Create Lithium Ion Battery that Can Charge an Electric Car for 27 Years

Scientists at Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Wurttemburg (ZSW) have developed one of the most efficient lithium-ion batteries yet. The super lithium-ion batteries could be used in electric vehicles and as solar power storage systems — and in an electric car they will retain 85% of their capacity after being charged every day for “about 27.4 years.” Read the rest of German Scientists Create Lithium Ion Battery that Can Charge an Electric Car for 27 Years Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: 10000 complete charging and discharging cycles , batteries for electric vehicles , batteries for solar power storage systems , battery capacity , battery power density , center for solar energy and hydrogen research baden-wurttemburg , efficient lithium-ion batteries , german federal ministry of economics and technology , german federal ministry of education and research , large pouch cells , large prismatic cells , short charging times for electric vehicles , superior acceleration for electric vehicles , wind and solar power storage , zsw , zsw laboratory for battery technology

Designers Bruno Dussert-Vidalet and Alessandro Dolcetta turn light into emotion with their new lighting company,  Blackbody . Presenting for the first time at Euroluce during Milan Design Week earlier this month, Blackbody incorporates works from designers across the globe, including a piece called “Bonzai” designed by Italian architect and designer Aldo Cibic, and “Bell family” designed by French designer Thierry Gaugain. The lamps are designed to be long-lasting (14,000 hours life), ultra flat (2 mm thickness), glare-free, heat-free, and 100% recyclable through the use of luminous OLEDs . More than simple lamps, Blackbody’s multi-faceted forms allow architects and designers to explore innovative and personalized approaches to application. + Blackbody OLED Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: Alessandro Dolcetta , ambient lighting , Blackbody , Blackbody OLED , Bruno Dussert-Vidalet , eco lighting , energy efficient lighting , Euroluce , green lighting , Milan Design , Milan Furniture Fair , OLED , Salone del mobile

Comments Off on 27,000 Rivers “Disappear” in China, According to Recent Waterway Census

20 years ago there were an estimated 50,000 rivers running through China – but a recent survey has found that over 27,000 of the waterways have disappeared.  An extensive three-year waterway census throughout the country found that China’s rivers only number 22,909 – remarkably less than previously thought. But despite the dicey recent history surrounding China’s rivers , environmental issues aren’t entirely to blame – old-fashioned human error may have thrown the estimated numbers severely off.
