Imagine walking down Fifth Avenue in the heart of Manhattan while the sounds of the city surround you: the cabbie is honking his horn, the store owner is blasting music, and construction workers are carrying on a loud conversation. Now imagine that all of this noise gives your smartphone a battery boost! This scenario could be a reality soon thanks to scientists from  Nokia and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) , who have successfully charged a phone using zinc oxide nanowires that convert sound-caused vibrations into electricity — called the piezoelectric effect. Image via Shutterstock Chances are, if you have owned more than one mobile phone in your life there is a drawer in your home dedicated to a collection of defunct chargers. In order to cut down on e-waste , the European Parliament voted last week to require all cell phone manufacturers to use a universal charger. The Radio Equipment Directive is expected to cut clutter by 51,000 tons annually and reduce the amount of interference between radio devices. After investigations into the working conditions at manufacturing companies such as Foxconn , smartphone producers have been under pressure to provide a product without sacrificing human health or basic rights. Last Wednesday, Dennis Woodside, the head of  Motorola , announced at the All Things D conference that his company would build a smartphone in partnership with Google in a factory located just outside Fort Worth, Texas. Not only will the plant allow Motorola to “iterate and innovate much faster,” but will provide around 2,000 new jobs for the area.
