A newly described shrub species is capable of consuming between 100 to 1000 times the amount of nickel that normal plants can. A team from the University of the Philippines-Los Baños that described the species in a new report also found that its ability to ‘eat’ toxic levels of metal could make the shrub a potential antidote to toxic waste sites around the globe. This week at the American Physical Society meeting in Denver, engineers were introduced to a new magnetic material could revolutionize the electronics industry. Professor Ivan Schuller from the University of California, San Diego presented a highly sensitive bilayer of nickel and vanadium oxide that responds to a narrow range of temperatures. When heat is applied, the material’s magnetism can be controlled without using a magnetic field or heat-intensive layers. This is the first known material able to express such properties, and it could become a new resource for computer memory systems . Dell likes to be first. They were the first to market laptops directly to college freshmen through bro-friendly language , first to ship their computers in mushroom-based packaging , and, if their recent move is any indication, the first to take wireless charging capabilities mainstream. According to a press release, Dell recently became the first major PC manufacturer to support a wireless charging standard by joining the Alliance for Wireless Power  (A4WP). Despite the obvious genius of wireless charging technology, technology makers have been slow to adopt it, and though growing, the number of third-party wireless charging options are ridiculously low. That’s all something that could change with Dell and other A4WP members leading the way. Solar cells image via Shutterstock Instead of rigid, cumbersome flat solar panels, you could soon be powering your home and electronics with a sticker. Engineers at Stanford have successfully fabricated thin, flexible solar cells that are able to be peeled and attached to almost any surface. The new technology is described in the December 20th issue of Scientific Reports and details how the team of scientists led by Xiaolin Zheng and Chi Hwan Lee achieved such a remarkable breakthrough. In addition to being dynamic, the peel-and-stick process also reduces cost and weight, making the cells an attractive alternative to their uncompromising relatives.
