Flying Fox Colony Photo via Shutterstock In the US, a disease known as white-nose syndrome (WNS) is decimating bat populations, and in an effort to combat the epidemic, The Nature Conservancy in Tennessee is building an artificial bat cave which will act a refuge for the winged mammals. Construction began on August 23, 2012, in Montgomery County, Tennessee, near an existing bat hibernation cave. It is hoped that it will be finished by the end of September in order to let the bats take up residence as soon as possible. The Nature Conservancy and Dow Chemical announced a new collaboration yesterday that will “help Dow and other companies recognize, value and incorporate nature into global business goals, decisions and strategies.” The pledge, $10 million from Dow over the next five years, is not the first corporate sponsorship for The Nature Conservancy, but it’s not likely to be any less controversial than some of years past.
