A group of Rice University mechanical engineering students recently created a pair of energy-generating shoes that are able to create and store electricity with every step. The team’s kinetic energy-harvesting PediPower shoes could be used to power portable electronics and medical devices. Photo via Shutterstock Lake Superior and other bodies of water around Minnesota have been found to contain a disturbing amount of chemicals , including prescription drugs and even cocaine. A recent study by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has found that local lakes and rivers are chock full of DEET, BPA , prescription and even illegal drugs. The 10-year study examined surface waters from the Minnesota area, finding contaminants even along untouched shorelines. Hydrogen is a fuel that has seemingly limitless potential, but scientists have only been able to produce it from fossil fuels, like natural gas. That is, until now. A doctoral student in mechanical engineering at the University of Delaware has designed a new type of reactor that produces hydrogen using nothing more than concentrated sunlight, zinc oxide, and water. And best of all, the zinc oxide used by the reactor can be reused, meaning that once the reactor is up and running, it would be self-sustaining.
