For the first time, researchers have quantified the benefits of not eating meat both in terms of global health and the environment.  The  new study illustrates a variety of benefits for health, the environment, and healthcare costs that, when combined, make a pretty strong case for cutting back on meat products. Computer modeling suggest that the state of the world could be improved by even slight reductions in meat consumption, and that global adoption of a fully plant-based diet could save up to 8.1 million deaths per year, as well as a boatload of money and greenhouse gas emissions. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating after an alarmed customer found whole, dead, frozen raccoons for sale in her local Asian market. It’s difficult to discern exactly what alarmed the customer most: the shock of discovering that yes people do eat raccoon, and yes raccoons are wild animals that forage for food waste, or that the deceased animals in question look rather more like road-kill-in-a-bag than the “game” they are legally classified as. Meat in a Shop Window Photo from Shutterstock It is estimated that the world’s population will reach 9.3 billion people by 2050, which raises significant questions as to how exactly we are going to feed such a massive number of people — and according to a new report from the University of Exeter , the answer is to eat less meat. The researchers also recommend that we recycle our waste and increase the efficiency of our farming processes, but to make a substantial enough difference the world needs to reduce its average global meat consumption from 16.6% to 15 % of average daily calorie intake. For much of the Western world, that translates into a 50 percent reduction in meat consumption.
