McDonald’s recently reported that their same-store sales (at stores open at least 13 months) fell a whopping 4.6% month-on-month. That’s coming on the heels of a brutal fall in sales overall since early 2012. Global same-store sales also fell 2.2% month-on-month, suggesting that while the US was particularly hard hit, the backlash against McDonald’s is worldwide. The chain also announced that their fourth-quarter results would be negatively affected by both the fall in sales and a supply issue in China, to the tune of $0.07 to %0.10 per share. Comments Off on USDA Approves Genetically Modified “Innate Potato”

Last week, the USDA approved a genetically engineered potato, known as the Innate Potato. Created and trademarked by Simplot,  the new potato “has 40% less bruise” than regular potatoes and doesn’t turn brown after it’s cut, thereby reducing food wastage . It’s also lower in the amino acid asparagine, which oxidizes into a suspected human carcinogen when potatoes are cooked at high temperatures, such as when making french fries or potato chips. One of Simplot’s biggest customers is McDonald’s , and the company is already being lobbied by anti-GMO campaigners to not accept Simplot’s new offering, despite its touted benefits. Comments Off on AOL is the Latest Company to Abandon ALEC

The ALEC exodus keeps on gaining momentum and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping. The most recent company to jump ship is internet giant AOL, which announced on Monday that it had decided not to renew its membership with the council. The company didn’t give any reason for leaving, but they are another in a rapidly growing list of  companies who have been eager to disassociate their brand from the controversial group, which has been called out for its seriously questionable viewpoints on climate change  and gun control. McDonald ‘s just announced it will be the first fast food restaurant in the United States to add lab-grown meat to its menu. Following the success of Sergey Brin’s lab-grown burger experiment in London last year, McDonald’s says they will ‘grow’ their own chicken McNuggets in special laboratories across New Jersey. The move is expected to reduce the number of real chickens needed to supply the company’s 35,000 outlets across the globe. Comments Off on McDonalds to Open All-Vegetarian Location in India

A Big Mac may be the international sign for McDonald’s , but not in India. The fast-food giant will open its very first all-vegetarian location in the South-Asian country next year, as part of a move to break through to a market that is 20 to 42% meat-free. With McAloo Tikki potato burgers leading the pack, McDonald’s is in for a real transition as it tries to appeal to both a Hindu population, Hindus who consider cows sacred, and the Muslim community who don’t eat pork. The first location, in true McDonald’s fashion, will be next door to a bustling tourist site, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, northern India.
